    single 2.5 good for a lo-po

My town car is needing the exhaust redone. Being it is still the lo po motor. would it be alright to run just a larger single. I am also looking to keep it more stealth. Wat would be more stealth than a single exhaust.
looking to run a performance muffler and the impala SS pass-side 2.5 maybe the flowmaster y pipe.

    whatever floats your boat..

do you mean stealth as in sound?? duals could be visually stealth if done properly.

That sounds like a fun project. A single 2.5" exhaust should be plenty for a low-po 302 and wouldn't be that restrictive anyway if it's done right (linky), plus it's cheaper and easier to install than a dual exhaust where you basically have to do everything twice. Sounds like you've got at least some of the details pretty much figured out already ... keep us posted!

I think four 3/4" pipes would work better.

I know someone running a custom single exhaust on his Towncar. Its new from the manifolds back, all large diameter single exhaust. He says its a nice improvement in fuel economy.

poke around in the exhaust section, you'll find the custom Y pipe and big single setup. It works and looks nice, but you'll really need to know someone who can work a pipe bender to get that to come out properly. Its all non-standard stuff so a bend card isn't going to exist for this.

Wow!!!! That looks GREAT!!!! Huge props to your buddy for the helpful pics and comments, and to his buddy for the slick pipe bending. Wonder about how much power that exhaust should be good though?

A local guy put a single 3in exhaust with a little Flowmaster race muffler on a 289. It sounds unique, anyway.

You'd be better off money wise with duals. Most people (especially import tuners) could care less if you have one or two pipes coming out the back.

You sure about that? Duals can run into a lot of money. I've got a bit too much in the system under the wagon, and it's still not as nice as what's on that Lincoln. And for 3" all the way back, I've seen advertised 3" exhaust for Fox Mustangs ... suppose that might fit almost as well as the Mustang tails I have ....

Custom exhaust cost buttloads around here. I had a guy quote me $50 just to install a muffler (not including the price of the muffler). When you get into custom bending, I wouldn't be surprised if it was $200 for a Y-Pipe.

I do agree with the cost of full custom work vs off the shelf parts. Even having "stock" stuff custom bent is usually not too expensive since they can feed a bend card into the machine and get the results, something like this would all be one-off manual bends since there is no template. Nice, but unless you know someone, probably not cheap.

Funky. So it sounds like it'd actually be a lot cheaper with that sort of thing to order an assortment of mandrel bends from JCWhitney and weld them up at home.

Tigge: you want a real entertaining labor price? Try your local Ford dealer. It was a dealer that charged me over $300 for a stock replacement muffler and tailpipe back when my mom was still forbidding me to work on my own junk. Previously, a Midas in Hobart, IN charged over $300 to replace the fake dual exhaust on a '90 Calais International even when I told them that a regular muffler would be fine.

Sounds like it might be time for one or more of us to start saving for an exhaust bender so we can help each other out on the cheap!

Anyone know if there is any problem welding coated pipes with a wire feed?

I'd say the coating would have to go where you were welding.
