It seems to me that someone may have recommended that you screw the crank bolt back in without the washer to help as a pilot..... :p

Oh well shit happens... no blood no foul... At least is is off and you can get on with the job.....

Agreed, a new one is only like $80 anyways, IIRC.

You're the engineer; you tell us how hot the crank can get before you mess up its heat treating! Though if it comes to that, I imagine you'll have long since melted down at least one main bearing.

That would actually be a very difficult problem to solve, Michael. Seeing as the heat application would hardly be even, it would be difficult to predict or quantify the heat transfer from the balancer to the crank. Not to mention, the conduction coefficients of the damper material, and crank material would be needed, and who they hel knows that. General k values for cast iron, etc could be used, but...

It could be solved, but too many unknowns to make an accurate prediction, the most important unknown being the unknown heat application pattern...

Plus, in order to evaluate the condition of the crank, and its heat treating, it'd be necessary to evaluate its fatigue life, which would be a difficult process in and of itself.

I was looking for an easy answer Michael, as easy answers are always better, wouldn't you agree?
