    Seized and broken Harmonic Balancer....

Title pretty much sums it is. Broke the balancer trying to pull it off, its stuck pretty damn good, and as a bonus, since I'm working at home, I have no Access to heat, and i dont think the pullers gonna re-attach to the balancer very easily. Any ideas on how to get this off, I've never had one seize before.

Only thing I can suggest is a lot of penetrating oil, and make sure when you thread the puller bolts in, they're in as far as you can possibly get them so they grab a whole bunch.

They were in as far as they could go. It ripped all the threads out of the hole and broke off the piece you see above.

Me thinks tis time for some destructive removal techniques, got an angle grinder or sawzall laying around? Whatever you try do not hammer on it as you may mess up the crank bearings.

just saw the crank snout off.

you could run longer bolts through the holes and then use a washer and nut on the back of the balancer. also some PB blaster and maybe tap on it lightly with a mini sledge

I noticed that one of the techs at work yesterday had a can of PB Blaster on his bench yesterday. Guess I could grab it when I go down tommorow to pick up some longer bolts to try what you said Ivan. Wonder if they would let me borrow the torches for the day, since no one that works at the shop on sundays knows how to use them.

                That was my first thought......
If you didn't remove the large bolt in the center first, it will never come off.... The large botl can sometimes be a pain.. Dampeners ususlly come of fairly easy with a puller... Even 40+ year old motors.....
I have never failed to get a dampener off by only using 2 bolts to pull with......... You need to go out and buy long enough bolts....

You didn't try and use the pulley bolts to pull with, did you????????? :hairraise:

Lol, I wish it was that, but I did remove it first. And no, I didnt use the pulley bolts. The tech at work actually lent me two pullers, so I'm gonna try the other tommorow. I soaked everythin down with penetrating oil and am letting it soak over night.

What are you using to turn the center bolt? How are you holding the crank from turning????

Impact gun, and the crank does not turn

Impact is not the ticket..... A breaker bar is often needed for stuborn pulling.... What are you using for a pilot? If you screw the crank bolt back in without the washer, it works alright for a pilot... Grinding the face flat or even giving it a little indentation works well.. You need to hold the crank while turning... A pipe wrench or a large bar and using a bolt in the 3rd hole and wedging between that bolt and the center puller bolt will work....

I talked to my neighbour today, and he suggested a breaker bar, so when I go to work tommorow I'm gonna grab mine outta my tool box and give it another shot. Said give it a 1/4 turn with the bar, then a tap with a hammer, 1/4 turn, tap, etc. I'm a bit weary of using a hammer though, but one way or another this stubborn pigs gotta come off. And as a pilot, I have a piece that came with the puller kit, kind of a pointed die, its kinda hard to explain what it looks like, but its worked on every other one I've taken off.
