Semi HO upgrade status - please help

Okay so I did the HO conversion (minus cam, injectors, and ecm). Its all bolted up and it runs, with problems:

    1. Loud top end (valve tap-but loud) type noise on drivers cyclinder bank.
    2. After about a minute, does not want to idle and stalls.

I reused the original lifters, pushrods, rockers, pedestals. only the complete heads are new. I disconnected the smog pump and blocked all three hoses that went to it. a small black plastic vac line, a small white plastic vac line, and a larger rubber line (1/4" approx). I had to cut and splice the wires for the O2 sensors because they were to short to reach the h-pipe o2 holes. I plugged the thermactors holes and removed the pipe.

After I shut the motor down I hear a tick-tock, clicking type noise from maybe under the manifold or somewhere on top the motor. Hard to say I don't have very good hearing.

I am thinking my valve noise is either, a collapsed lifter (not likely, as they were fine before the build up and it is a low miles car 80K), a bent pushrod that I may have damaged when i bolted up the rockers (possible, I did not rotate the engine to bolt up, I just figured the lifter would collapse, or spring would compress as I tightened up), or most menacingly, a bent valve. I bought ebay heads which were visually in great shape, low miles, still had paint on the valve springs, but were just butcher paper wrapped, taped and shipped in one cardboard box. Perhaps dinged a stem in shipping and when it got compressed got stock.

As far as the idle, and clicking issues I'm clueless.

Please help me, I tore apart a absolutely perfectly running, purring machine, and now it isn't right, and I love the car, and I'm really feeling low right now. Any suggestions would be really appreciated.

What is the history on the heads? Do you know if they were just rebuilt, and what parts are new and old?

So basicaly all you did was swap the heads right? No other engine mods?

It sounds like you have more than just one issue. This will make it more difficult to diagnose.

The history of the heads is that they are 35K takeoffs of a mustang, the nI had them milled 0.020. Visually they were in very good shape when I got them, but like I said the packing they came in from ups was not too protective. They had light enough wear on them that the paint was still on the valve springs - they basically looked almost new.

I also did the upper, egr and throttle body, as well as headers and h-pipe, but no other internal engine mods except the heads. Before I disassembled the top end, there were no loud lifters, valves, or anything else, and I reused everything but the heads.

how long did u run it? sometimes they are noisy till they run for a while at first........need to get it warm and the oil circulating, then see what happens.......i replace alot of head gaskets on cars, and alot of times they will be noisy and dont want to stay running at first........make sure all the vacuum lines are in the correct places too

Pop the valve covers back off if it doesn't straighten up after warming up and see if any of the rockers are wobbly feeling. Might need to spin the engine by hand some to see if one has play in it. You might also want to re-check the rockers for tightness. Fords just torque down, but one might not be all the way tight. Check for vacuum leaks first though, it sounds like it could be an improperly seated intake gasket.

The post-shutdown ticking is probably just the headers or exhaust pipes cooling off. Exhaust leaks while running can also sometimes make a ticking noise, so be sure it isnt just a bad header gasket.
