    Black smoke and sometimes stalling.

Ok I am helping my friend out with his 83 Merc 2 door and it is having those issues. What should I check for, a bad map or what? I searched and found alot of these threads for 86 and up panthers but no CFI ones. Oh yeah it is a 302 with cfi so ok.

not too familiar with cfi but I would suspect either a bad O2 sensor, or the fuel pressure regulator is bad. Last but not least, an injector could be gummed up and sticking partially open, but I doubt it.

My first guess would be the o2 sensor, but checking the fuel pressure is cheaper, so I would try that first.

No info in the CFI section?

Running rich. TPS, MAP, and all kinds of other things. I'd look for broken vacuum lines first...

busted vacuum line on the MAP. 83 is EEC III CFI, they're a bit of a different beast. No timing adjustments, minimal ability to pull codes, and expensive sensors.

could be alot of things really.. black smoke? is it really sooty and smelly? my dads van did that when the dizzy bolt came loose and threw off the timing.

when it is running does it run fine with power?

I would bet it's a MAP sensor problem. When I had no Vacuum at my MAP, it would run real rich and would ocassionally stall. Make sure you have a vacuum connection at the MAP. Have you checked it for codes? If it comes to be a bad O2 sensor yet it also says bad MAP, replace the MAP first. I am pretty sure that's what it is.

good luck finding one in the yard. 1980-1983 Lincolns with a 302, or 1983 cars with a 302. Not a bunch of them around. Those sensors are grossly expensive, like 2-4x what eec iv parts cost.

An 83 is a good carb swap cantidate. The EEC-III is one of ford's biggest mistakes.

I loathed the setup I had on the original GMGT...

its a typical cfi thing, when it works, its fine, but when it fucks up good luck. the fact that the sensors are way expensive makes it a whole lot worse to deal with. I've seen perfectly running eec iii cfi cars, (ok, one, a ratty 83 tbird) and i've seen perfectly running eec iv cfi cars as well. they do exist.
