after my car heats up and and am stopped in drive my engine light flickers on and off and sometimes just stays on solid. but once i start moving or put it in park the light goes out. is that anything to worry about?

Oil pressure is getting low...very typical with these cars after 20 years or so. What weight of oil are you running? Best bet is to put a little bit heavier oil in it and keep driving.

Is the light still coming on with the 10W30? It's not a huge concern; you'd be surprised how well a small block Ford can run with virtually no oil pressure. Just ask Mike (Mr. LTD) about his old '87 Crown Vic.

            Does your engine knock?

Wait you said it comes on after it warms up? You're over heating your engine I bet. When the light comes on, do you feel any change in the performance of the engine?

No, he's not overheating it. The oil warms up and thins out, and the oil pressure drops off. Completely, utterly normal under those conditions.

Depends on how bad they are. If they get loose enough, they'll start to knock, but they can be loose to the point of low oil pressure without making any noises.

Buy a cheap mechanical guage and check your oil pressure....

The check engine light in the older panthers is more of a replace engine light. Run a heavier oil and save up for a rebuild.

                          Use Lucas Oil Stabilizer.

I spent about $1500 on my last engine. Machine work totalled around $600, and I then proceeded to nickel and dime myself to death on things like spray paint and header bolts. :p Total as-installed was a bit more than that, though, as the project included things like a new fuel tank and upgraded torque converter. The basic rebuild kits from Summit Racing run around $250, so that's what I went with after determining I needed new pistons.

My machine shop bill was close to 700, and the engine kit about another 300. Could have gotten it a bit cheaper if I'd ordered it direct but I got it through the machine shop. I'm guessing like 1200-1300 all told after the misc items, paint, oil drain plugs, spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor, yadda yadda yadda. If you're paying someone to assemble it, its going to be a fair bit more.
