I think turndowns after the mufflers would be best. That'd be the cheapest route, plus I like the fact that the exhaust doesn't show at all
Niether does a nicely done bumper exit with turndowns. My 87 had some prices heavy guage stainless tips, which were mostly unseen unless you were under the car....And it will be quieter in the car and not kill you from CO2 poisoning.
My wagons exhaust isn't too visible either

a lot of H or X pipes are 2+ piece for shipping reasons. My X has one of the downpipes disconnected just forward of one of the cats. Makes it a fair bit smaller to package up. Some H pipes have the joint right at the H itself.

i got mufflers that dump out the back without tails on my merc with chrome tips that jus peak from the axle. it was a cheap 30buck job since i got new parts from a swap meet. i dont really like it anymore. as the mufflers got loose inside, the drone is too much and annoying and isent loud outside. out the side is where i like it. im gonna get the lincolns tails customised to come out the side in a angle and the cut of the tip will run parallel with the side of the car.

With the 1989 (sig pic) we just hollowed out the 2nd set of cats on the H pipe and ran straight pipe's out to the back, It sounded AWESOME! I plan on doing that with my 1999 crown vic
I am sorta thinking of getting the late '70s Trans Am tips. I forgot what they call them, but they are those double turndown tips. Right now I am running some cut elbows for turndowns. Eventually I want to put some resonators (glasspacks) on the tails with the Trans Am tips to quiet down the CV. I noticed that the Summit turbo muffs have been getting kinda loud lately and everything is tightened up under there.

Those are fucking cool. I wanna get a chrome set eventually for when I pull mine out to the back!

Great minds think alike. Thats what my brother is using on his car. He bought his Trans Am "splitters" from Pypes ($$$$$) last year. He wants to go with Impala tails, and finish it off with those splitters right behind the wheels...
