    Gear...

I am buying the igniton parts tommorow for the baby LTD... to convert it to the four barrel... One item on the list is the distributor, and I have forgotten which one I need... Do I need the Steel gear, or the cast gear? The engine is the 5.0. H.O. CFI.... can anyone let me know which one I need? I appreciate the info!

It is going in the shop sometime next week to get converted to the four barrel... Should run alot better.. The guy doing it owns a mid 10's Mustang... so he should be able to get it running REALLY nice!

Probably iron, as I think the earliest roller motor was the '85 5.0 HO four-barrel. You can check your old distributor gear to make sure; if it's iron it should have a little roughness on the top end where it necks down; a steel gear will be pretty smooth.

Are you going with a factory-style Duraspark II system?

I would agree, its an iron gear.

only Hydraulic roller cam engines use/need the steel gear

Yes, I' going with the Dura Spark ignition... since I want it to look as stock as possible... I am going to try to get over to the junkyard tommorow to see if I can find a V-8 Tbird with the duraspark, So I can get the wiring harness out of the car... Should make it easier to wire it up....

thats sort of a toughie. i'm also gonna say iron, but there's a chance its steel. the 1985 manual mustang got a roller cam and a 4v carb, auto got a flat tappet cam with CFI. most likely you also have the flat tappet. if in doubt, remove a valve cover and pull a pushrod out. they're longer for the flat tappet engines.

The 1985 LTD HO 302 CFI motor definitely got a flat tappet cam....... NO 1984 motor got a roller cam.....

hm for some reason i was thinking his car was an 85. ok flattie it is. This does of course assume the engine is original.

The engine is original except for being rebuilt, and bored .30 over, new pistons, align bored, block decked, heads gone thru... (New valves, springs, seals, etc..) about $1200.00 worth in just machine work to the block... (This was done by my friend, before I bought the car from him... another reason we think the CFI just isn't keeping up with ther engine, so to speak...) And he told me tonight he put a Ford replacement cam in, the same part number that came out of it, as he didn't want to make the engine anymore redical that it was, so to speak... and it is a non roller cam lifter setup... (Flat tappet) So i guess that answers THAT question!!! Tom!
