Yeah I tend to like good, long throws. Not much of a fan of those really well-designed short-throw shifters that shift like you're pushing a button. A decently long throw really feels like you're shifting a vehicle.

I agree with this, even though I putter a tighter Hurst Comp. shifter in my truck. Even with the shortened throws, you know you are shifting...

The only thing with the shifter I put in is, the handle really needs to be longer; not because it is uncomfortable, but because I think a pick up truck needs a long handle. The handle for mine is actually intended for a Dakota. Once I make the transfer case stick, I am probably going to see what I can dig up for other handles for the transmission. Its tough though, because the shifter is right on the dashboard, and it needs to lay back as soon as it comes through the shifter boot.

I wanted to use the handle from an SRT-10 Ram, but the shifter location is closer to the driver, and much further back.

While the NV 3500 in my truck doesn't provide lightning shifts, I am impressed with its driveability and "shiftability" over older truck transmissions (NP 235, and the like). I think a newer truck transmission, provided it could be adapted, would be ok in a panther.

Also, I am still standing on the statement that drag racing is best done in an automatic. Any time I go to the track I watch cars run all day, and there are only a handful of guys that can shift a stick shift car "properly". Everyone else misses shifts, etc, etc.

Even the guys that can drive... I don't think a manual transmission is helping them any. They'd go faster with an automatic.

I agree the new transmissions do shift better than the old. Only downside in my mind it the hydraulic clutch. I don't really like them. I want my clutch so stiff the pedal tries to bend when you push it. I learned how to drive stick in a ranger with a 302 ho and one of the old 4 speed granny gears. Awesomely fun truck, but I never could find neutral in it.

You couldn't find neutral in one of those old 4speeds? I forgot the designation but was it the one that was a 3spd+OD with a granny 1st? My '85 F150 came with that and it was a pretty rugged and easy-to-use transmission. I never had trouble finding neutral. Damn thing was so worn out I had more trouble finding first!

No it was a 3 speed plus granny. And fairly well used.

Sloppy shift linkages and tired transmissions can get annoying to find gears in. Its real fun when the H is more of a vague suggestion than a truly useful shift pattern. My VW was of the "bowl of mashed potatoes" system before I replaced the bushings and couplers.

Every early VW I've ever driven had a BOMP transmission.

FWD ones? Yeah those get pretty horrible. Several plastic bushings in the shift linkage, and they all crumble and fall out. The air cooled ones have one coupler thing in the back, and one bushing supporting the shift rod right under the shifter itself. Not much of a linkage on the old Beetle, the shifter ran a rod, and it went straight to the trans where it activated the 3 shift forks. When the parts are good, it actually has a decent feel to it. Not sporty by any means, but you can find gears and it has a distinct pattern.
