Well I like to keep it Ford parts. Ford never made a pistol grip shifter. But they did have T-handle shifters.

Like I said run what you like I'm running what I like.

Trust me, I'm the same way... but as you said Ford didn't make a pistol-grip shifter, and I love 'em so damn much that I can't help but cross-match. Plus it makes things even more unique and creative, which is a huge plus in my opinion.

But again, like you said, these are all just opinions.

Although now that I'm thinking about it, after I put this 5spd in my truck I may have to put a pistol grip into it.

I keep my shifts light and swift.

If you have ever drag raced a toploader, there is no such thing as light and swift....... It isn't the same as shifting an aftermarket T-5 or TKO... shifter.....

I don't like a long throw. I could shift my Toyota cars with one finger, very gently, very short throw, without stressing the finger. My trucks though all had a sloppy, lomg throw, even though the syncros were tight. I just didn't like it. I've never driven a pistol or t-type grip vehicle, just knobs, and knobs are okay with me. trying the others does appeal to me though. Maybe one day.

I like T-handle shifters. In our honda ricer (err, racer ) at school, we made a lead T-shifter handle so that you can just throw it forward with almost no effort. You can throw it back with no effort and the weight makes shifting faster (and the fact that we cut the handle down a bit). Should be interesting to see how it works come race day.

              Never have.

Drag racing is best suited with an automatic.

On the T-handle thing... I had one on the slapstick in the Chevy, T-handle itself was VERY comfortable, but because the shifter was kinda far to the right from me it made for some very awkward position of the right hand. Replaced the T-handle with a ball - much much better feel! The shifter in the Lincoln has a T-handle too, but because tis much closer to the seat and the steering wheel I don't get the funky joints angles like in the Chevy. Shifting a stick with a T-handle - tried that one, my hand felt worse than in the Chevy with the T-handle... my take is T-handles are very good for automatic shifter located low and close to the seat and steering wheel, remote shifters and sticks feel better in my hand with a ball knob. Pistol grip I think will be a better choice for a stick-shift, the way the human arm is designed holding a vertical pistol grip or even a ball is a more natural position for the wrist than holding a horizontal T-handle.

I had a co-worker in Louisville who told me the same thing. He said it was better because it was way more predictable. All you had to do was know your car, and then you knew when and how hard it would shift, whereas with a stick you could easily miss your optimal shift. Because of "handicapping" or whatever they call it in the amateur drag racing world, it didn't make much of a difference that it made the car heavier to run auto. But I realize I'm not using any of the proper terminology, so, meh.

That is in bracket racing. I hate bracket racing..... Open comp is better because you are allowed to break out... Heads up is even better.

thank you for that very informative necropost

Production of column-shifted vehicles were stopped for a reason. They sucked.

First off, slow down. Period's and comma's are your friends. Also use entire words instead of made up text messaging jibberish. Then you can be #111one1111!!!!!! As far as the trans goes, I like truck trannies better. I grew up driving em. And while the little tiny shifter in my moms miata is nice, its really not suited to me. I'd run a shifter about as tall as the seat backs with a skull shift knob on it. That's just how I like to roll. Hell my mud truck had a chrome ball on the t case shifter.
