    What is this?

The temp sender (thats what I think it is) at the back of my intake manifold, passenger's side. I can't find anything about it in my service manual, and would like to eliminate it with my 4 bbl swap (new manifold may not have a provision for it). The two wires run on the main harness over to the drivers inner fender. from there they either go in the car, or to the MCU.

Its should be circled, if I did this right.

The new intake WILL have a hole for a temp guage sending unit. You CAN eliminate any and all of the EEC application engine sensors though.......

It appears as though Edelbrock 3783 has the hole. But you can't always go be a picture, right? Is that indeed an EEC sensor?

Also, right on top of my thermostat, there is another sensor with a 3 port vacuum switch on it. Can I get rid of that?

You do not "need" any vacuum switches with a carb.....

So if I eliminate that switch, I shouldn't have any adverse effects?

Any ideas what it does? Is it something for my current engine control/ carb? Or is it something that functions something else that needs to be retained?

probably something emissions related, I'd guess plumbed into the smog pump or the egr system if I had to guess.

does your car have the police gauges?? have you looked to see what senders are near the oil filter? becuase Im thinking thats an oil presure sender... 351 yes???

As far as the vacuum switch - follow the lines and figure out what it operates - you probably dont need it.

Two wires? That's the ECT. That usually goes with the computer stuff. Do you have gauges in your car? If you do, it might be the feed for the police temperature guage.

No police gauges at all. I removed the factory sender for the temp sensor, which is at the front of the manifold. I have aftermarket analog gauges now instead of the lamp.

As for the oil pressure, why would the sender for oil pressure be at the top of the intake manifold? The oil sender is down near the filter. I have a mech. o.p. gauge, and I have also retained the factory light. When I unplug the upper sensor there is no difference, and no lights come on.

The 5.8 car I saw with guages used a sensor in the normal location down by the oil filter.

Ive seen oil senders in that spot on a few V8's... Ive actually replaced a couple of them... not on fords though... BUT in the pics of DeTomaso Pantera's Ive seen, (which have ford 351's in them) they have thier oil senders in that spot.
Ive never seen one there on a box, But I havent had quality time with a 351vic so I was just throwing that out there.
You can remove it and see what fluid comes out to know for sure...

I have pratically slept next to my 351 back in the day, and can check out the block if you guys need to.

That's where I hooked up my sender as well, with an extension and 45 degree elbow, however. Mercracer, is there anywhere else to get it on a 351W, like on an SBC? I don't see anywhere where this can reasonably happen.

Off the top of my head, I can't think of any place... One nice thing about the Cleveland is that they also have the place on the block by the oil filter. One trick for high RPM longevity is to run a line from the oil filter area hole to the back of the block to be sure that you are getting oil pressure to the rear. For an engine with a Performance history, they had a crappy factory oiling system....
