    trrany question.

    Hey mangs.

    Got a little tranny question.

What makes a trany going out if it has a trany service now if it never had one before?

As in, if it hasn't going bad what make's it go bad from the service?

The tranny was fine, then it went in for routine service, and soon after it was back in service it died? What service was performed, fluid flush and filter change? Did they try to re-set TV pressure?

nono, i havent had this done. im scured to have it done. or do it. due to how they are known to fail afterwards.

Im wondering what makes them fail though.

They ain't supposed to fail man, I had mine open and the valve body removed and altered when I was installing my shift kit, put it back together and never had an issue with it (sans the sticky valves, but that's to be expected), Jon here (GL) did the same to his AOD and it hasn't failed. And neither of us is a tranny mechanic.

Yep, I had my valve body out at around 150,000 or so, dunno when the last time was before that it had had a tranny service, but it's been doing fine, and it's now at 165,000.

they only do that when the fluid is black and burned anyway. usually once its to that point, the trans is ready to die, messing with it just brings it on sooner. I think it has something to do with the clean fluid being highly detergent, it cleans out all the garbage from the valve body and the friction surfaces, and by that point the garbage is all thats holding it together. Clean it out, and it dies.

I did it to my car, changed just what was in the pan (didn't know about the converter). First change in 125k miles, fluid was brown like used motor oil. It still shifted fine when I put it back together, and lived for probably a month before I killed the motor. Then it caught fire and it was all over with, but till that point it shifted flawlessly through all 4 gears. I can't say it would have been the same had I changed all the fluid. It might have grenaded on the way home.

yeah, it can happen. Lossens all the dirt and crap up and makes a mess of everything. Kinda the same as having a sludged motor and doing tons of oil changes or adding slick 50. Loosens evething up, clogs the filter/pickup nad bye bye motor.

All the sludge the non synthetic left behind is all that is keeping everything sealed then you start using synthetic and it cleans all that out..... Now your leaking.
                That's part of it....

Synthetic molcules are smaller and more consistant in size over conventional oils. The worn seals have larger gaps and allow the synthetics to leak out. That being said, I ran a 250k mile 5.0 on synthetics and never had any issues. That car was run 140,000 miles on conventional oils before I aquired it.

Also take in to consideration that the synthetics also stay more fluidlike in colder situations, which means before the car warms up and everything expands, the synthetic can leak out even more easily.

There are a lot of things to take into consideration, even doing frequent conventional oil changes will make a motor blow up or leak....

When I got my car at 100K, I didn't know any of its maintenance history. My dad serviced the trans mission at 102K; drained the converter and all. The fluid that came out was like brand new. Since then, my Dad changed the fuid again at 110K, and I changed it at 120K. There has yet to be shavings in the pan or discolored fluid either. I guess I was lucky in the fact that the car appears to have been well maintained.
