    Smog pump

    Hey guys
I would like to know if you can remove the smog pump without affecting the way the engine runs after removing it. I would also like to get rid of the a/c (Doesnt work anyways) that way I can get rid of the belt that runs both. Eliminating some of the mess under the hood. By the way we have no emission testing in this area so I have no worrys about that. Thanx

Yes, it's fine. You will need to plug up the tube or the holes left in the back of the head.

also need to cap off that pipe down to the cats, if you still have it. i cut mine off about 3" from the cats, hammered a 1/4" pipe plug in there, and sealed it with that high temp putty stuff that looks like play-dough. not fancy, but it did the job.

Better than my fix. The air-injection tubes on my crossover pipes are capped with bits of heater hose clamped over closed-end lugnuts! :p

        -------------------------

BTW, if you eliminate the AIR tube from the heads, the smog passages in the heads stop up nicely with short 5/8-11 bolts. Should be doable without major disassembly.

That is if you can actually thread the bolts in, which is often easier said than done. Doing it on a SEFI car - pain in the ass if you don't pull the upper intake, still doable tho.

Will a car still pass emissions without all that smog pump bullshit? I've heard it does but I wanna be sure. I can't stand all that crap under my hood and I'd like to take it all out, but sadly Connectacunt has emissions testing.

Won't pass visual if the inspector knows anything about older cars (if they do visual there). May or may not pass sniffer, but it seems most do okay without it if they are running fine.

The thing I like most about being without a smog pump is not hearing that silly sound it makes.

                  What sound does it make?

I don't think they do visual here... at least they didn't do it at my last test. I just go to a mechanic I know and have him do it.

Dunno how to describe it other than a smog pump sound, lol.

Mine was starting to make a weird tick-tickey poof-poof-poofey sound when it got removed. Oddly, it sort of seemed like the car made slightly more low-end torque with it.

mine had bad bearings and sounded like a 50s sci-fi alien spacecraft at idle. Above idle it made this sort of buzzy/farty noise. Removal also makes doing plugs on that side somewhat easier without all the bs in the way.

I know it has been asked many times before, but I will ask again, What is the belt number that you use after the pump is gone? My AC works so I need the belt to run it too.

Couldn't tell you exactly; my best suggestion is to put the tensioner in the fully-in position and use a string to figure out what belt will go around everything. Then find a parts-counter guy with a brain who'll understand needing to try a couple different belts to find the one that fits best.

Incidentally, this would be a good time to swap to a grooved tensioner pulley if you can find one; I want to say MeLikeyStripperChicks or someone said one could be gotten from a Cougar, but I could be totally wrong.

Really depends. I passed smog here without cats or the pump. All I have is an EGR system. The smog pump can be helpful if you car has issues passing because you can hook it up to constantly pump into the cats and will help out signifigantly.
