This all boils down to 1 important consideration:

how much money do you have?

Right now, if the car is running good, honestly I wouldn't fool with the motor before you get some decent gears and exhaust. Run it like that, save up some bucks and do a head/cam/intake swap all in one shot to get the best results.

If you want good heads on the cheap, the gt40p heads are quite good. They do need a specific header, so if you're considering using them, just get compatible headers now so you won't have to buy them later on. P compatible headers also work with any other Ford head, so it wont be a waste even if you don't use a set of those heads. They're really not that expensive, and they are pretty good quality.

Take your budget, and find you an explorer motor.

Build it, and once it's built, swap it in.

And yes, the underdrive pulley is about 170 dollars, they are made-to-order.

Mustang pulleys will not work to my knowledge.

if you don't want to do a full motor, then you'll need the head/cam/intake gig. Further to what I said earlier about P heads being decent and cheap, here ya go

550 bucks and they're brand new. You can get a set of E7 heads rebuilt stock for probably 250 bucks plus whatever you paid for them, 50-100 bucks probably. Ported E7 heads are probably going to run you 700-800 bucks. Stock P heads will do almost as well, and sometimes better than a ported E7 for less money. They aren't the be-all end-all of cylinder heads, but its hard to beat what you get for how much they cost.

                Rear End

Do you even know which rear end it is you have? Whenever you get a chance look on the driver's door on the sticker and look for 'ax' for axle, and there should be a letter or a number there. I think someone on here has the axle codes posted on his sig. Or you could tell us the letter or whatever and we could tell you.

                    Rockers, definitely not.

Lifters, no, but if there are machined flat pads near the lifter holes inside the valley, you can install a factory rollercam setup without modifications.

Look on the driver's side door, at the back edge. There'll be a sticker there with several different nuggets of information on it. One spot will say "AX" and under it there will be a letter or a number. Find out what that letter/number is, and we can translate it into the ratio and whether it's a limited slip or not.

from the factory there is also one on the rear. This is the one from my car

Its attached under one of the cover bolts, usually towards the top. The lower row is the info you want

                          3L55 88 6G15

                          This particular one means:

3.55 limited slip, 8.8" carrier, assembly date July 15, 1986 (incidentally my bday is July 15).

If yours has a space between the first number and the next two, it means its an open end rear. L indicates a traction lock.
