    Bucking with no power

I have an 87 Crown Vic 302 F.I. 158k. After about an hour at highway speeds the other night the car began to lurch pretty badly, top speed would vary between about 45 and 70 mph. Even when I would floor the gas pedal it would have no effect. I noticed if I was going downslope it was better about one thrid of the time. I did manage to get it home although it died at two traffic lights. Starts up just fine. approximatly three to four thousand miles on new o2 sensors two injectors and plugs. This may not be related but I have a very audible clicking noise coming from a relay on the drivers fenderwell the one furthest from the front. I have heard it clicking from time to time prior to the bucking.

    Thanks

Sounds to me like there is something clogging the exhaust somewhere. I would start by checking the cats. The clicking sound my be either backfiring inside the cat or a fuel pump relay

Fuel filter could be clogged, TFI could be dying...

Generally a clogged cat is constant....

Could also be one of many sensors going bad and confusing the ECU.

Getting the codes checked would be a good place to start.

+1 on the fuel filter...sounds like a textbook case of a clogged filter to me.

yeah, bad load of fuel could do that. water and dirt in the filter = no run good.

Looks like the fuel filter is the consensus, it has over 15k on it anyway. Thanks for everyones suggestions.

I am thinking the fuel pump is dying, myself. The sound you are hearing is the increasing load of the dying fuel pump wreaking havoc on the fuel pump relay....this is my prediction.

I agree with it being a fuel pump issue of some sort. The clicking is the relay, and when it clicks, you usually lose power a second or two later correct?

88MercWagon, The bucking behavior began when I was passing another vehicle going slighty upgrade. The clicking relay has been there on and off for about sixty days, although it does seem to be getting louder I can not hear it when driving the car. I have every bit of paperwork on this car including the order sheet it has never had a relay or pump replaced it did get a new module under a recall way back. I put about 150 miles a day on so if the pump was going I could follow. Do you know if it ( pump) is in the tank or external?

                      Thanks

The pump is inside the tank.

Fortunately you can access the sending unit without dropping the tank.

yeah but its not the side where the pump is the pump is on the rear side of the tank, up against the trunk. Has to come down to get it out. The one on the front is for the fuel gauge sender.

I received my code scanner and fuel pressure gauge from Fed Ex. The car had an EVP code in stored memory no continuous codes and 46lbs of fuel pressure running. I took a tooth brush to the egr and passages replaced the fuel filter and fuel pump relay. When I rechecked for codes the evp a code 34 I think it was had disappeared. The fuel pressure had dropped to 38 lbs car ran good. I did however now have a continuous code 94. Took the car for a 30 mile ride no problems. Then I tried to take it to work this morning, got about seven miles and it was back to bucking I noticed though that when I would try to rev the motor in neutral I got thick black smoke out the exhaust.

                              Suggestions?
