I figure, if it sounds like crap, I'll just put the single exhaust back on and keep the h-pipe for a future project. Just gonna be the 2" pipe out the sides unless I stumble across some decent tips along the line.

Oh, I don't expect it to sound like crap, especially if you still got the cats and hollow them out - I think you'll be pretty happy with the result actually. And bare pipe is what I ran for half an year, before I put on those dual 3" tips, it was fine and sounded good. Just make sure you put a slant cut at the exits, it will look much better with that.

Yes, a lot of states visiually inspect for presence of OEM emissions part, some even test you with the sniffer

We do check for cats here in CT. You need to have tailpipes here too, if you need the sniffer for emissions. No tailpipes= no test.

The "sniffer" is an exhaust gas analyzer--basically they have a probe that gets shoved up the tailpipe of the car (think of taking your car in for a prostate exam) and it checks what's coming out for certain substances that are considered to be pollutants.

We don't have it in Minnesota.

technically removing the smog stuff and converters is a federal offense, but if you don't have inspection you can usually get away with it. I get sniffer and a visual check of the cats. None of the other emissions controls are checked for. It passes the sniffer with just the cats and no pump.
