    Cam/Lifter Install 50% Finished

Well, I have successfully recovered the rogue lifter that busted on me, removed the camshaft (The lobes were worn BADLY) and removed the head....Now all thats left is putting the new cam/lifters in, and extracting the broken bolt in the head...

As soon as I gain access to a camera I will post pics...

Why did you remove the heads? And how does one break a head bolt?

Sorry for the non-descriptiveness mangs, the lifter in question HAD to be faulty, it had a buildup on the bottom, i took pliers to it, and pulled it around 1/2 way out and then it went *Pow* and the pieces that fell off hit me in the face and fell to the ground, one rather large piece, it kinda looked like a collar or something went into the block, but I bought a magnetic, flex-wand thingy to fish it out.

As for the bolt in question, it was bolt that holds the intake manifold onto the head, it was old/brittle and when we undid it the thing just came apart....

BUT everything is falling into place (Finally)...and when I get the car running again I will post pics of how worn out the cam was....
        thanks all-

                ???

Unbolt rockers, take out pushrods, remove intake, pull lifters out. Usually you need pliers, dont pull straight out but wiggle em back and forth. Pop new (heavily coated with cam lube) lifters in and go.

hydraulic flat tappet lifters be pretty cheap too....I remember you saying you had lifter noise, Sooo might not be too hard or expensive to fix.

Don't need to remove the heads to change the lifters...just gotta take the intake off.

See? You can get at the lifters with only the intake off. No head removal required.

Sounds like you hooked onto the spring clip on the lifter and pulled it apart. There's a snap ring inside the end of the lifter that holds the guts together. If the ring is removed, the internal piston will come out of the lifter itself.

If you've got one head off, I'd pull the other just to put a new gasket in there.

No reason to replace them on a 91. You can reuse them a couple of times. They are NOT torque to yield......

Definitely replace both head gaskets. Any time you do intake work on SB Fords, you risk disturbing the head gasket. Anything with some age to it is even worse. A little bit of extra time now will potentially save alot of time later.....

Here guys (Thanks Nate for the pic, as I no longer have a camera)

This is where/what all has been fuckin up in the engine lately....

-Thanks MercRacer, but as added protection, any bolts that I even suspect of being faulty/near breaking, etc, I am replacing new.....
