For Those of You With P72s............

.........or box PIs with 351Ws. I read on the Ford Racing website that the 351W/5.8L engines are approx. 3" taller at the valve covers than the 302/5.0L. I have read that a lot of you run carbs not only for tuning and expense reasons; also because carbs and a low profile air cleaner would fit under a stock hood. My question is, how tight is it under the hoods of your box PIs? Are there any valve cover issues too? I know I have brought this up before, but I am just trying to see what the possible hang-ups of putting an EFI 351W in a CV will be. I know I have to put a scoop on the hood for this and I am prepared to figure out how to do that. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you have real tall valve covers, the wiper box is a problem, but otherwise you should be fine there. The bottom of the box can be notched out to fit, I think Duce did that with his. Not sure about hood clearance with the stock stuff, but I know one of those Ford Racing dual plane intakes and an Eddy 600 carb along with a 3" air cleaner fit fine under the hood of Natehawk's car.

My setup is bone stock on the intake/carb/air cleaner and the valve covers...not sure how much hood clearance there is, but I'll measure it if I think of it.

I don't know what comes stock with the E series van motors (hydraulic roller 351W), but I was thinking of using those valve covers (of course I'll paint them or something). Though I was thinking somewhere down the line of getting the Ford Racing 5.0L/5.8L Truck valve covers (part # from JEGS 397-M-6582-A351R). So I take it that the valve covers won't hit the hood. That was one of my main concerns. Anyways thanks for the help in sorting this out for me.

If you drill out the rivets for the wiper box you can just have the frame which is much smaller than the whole unit.

You can use your stock 302 covers if you want. As long as you don't go too radical with the covers it'll probably be fine. I forget what covers are on Nate's car, but they are taller than stock, and don't hit. if you have valve covers so tall they hit the hood, you have some seriously f'd up valve covers, they'd have to be like a foot high or something crazy.

Theres lots of room under the hood, and also a fair amount of hood clearance. I had a really tall K&N element on the air cleaner for a short time (probably 4"), and it still cleared fine.

We had a hard time with the wiper box when putting the engine in my '88. I think we ended up breaking it, or at least cracking it. But, it gave us the chance to clean all the crap out of there.

i was able to run a 351 with a rpm air gap intake, a 1/2" nitrous plate, a holley DP carb, a 1/2' air cleaner spacer, and a Moroso 3" drop base air cleaner, i had to remove some bracing to clear the air cleaner, however the air cleaner stud was at the surface of the hood so i had to drill a hole.

as gadget said i have tall valve covers which require notching the bottom of the wiper box. with roller rockers it is a pain to remove the valve cover. also with the air gap intake the throttle cable wont fit passed the wiper box, i had to notch the side of it to get it to clear.

when i get home ill post up some pics of what i had to do

Thanks again guys. At least this is something that I don't have to worry too much about. Now all I have to do is sort out how I will deal with a hood scoop. I'll post that in the body/make section.

That looks wicked Duece!!!!! My dad thinks it's funny that you had to mod the wiper motor to clear the valve covers. He said it reminded him of when he took a threaded rod and used it as a brace to hold down his 413 wedge in his 57 Fury. Yeah, whatever valve covers that come with the engine that I pull from the JY will be reused until I scrape up the dough for the Ford Racing covers. I can't wait until I have enough money saved for this build.

That damn wiper box always seems to be in the way. I have a hole drilled through the bottom of mine. It was strange for people to see me remove the wiper motor to adjust the valves. It'll also be in the way when you put the motor back in. Get some pics if you remove the plastic body posted earlier. Sounds like a good idea.

once the valve cover are off i can get to the valves fine, just kind of a pain removing that head since its kinda hard to get to the head bolts back there. stock valve covers will clear back there obviously, but tall aftermarket covers will hit
