    '88 CP engine misfiring

Hi, I have noticed that my engine misfires ( or is it backfire?)a few times upon starting first time in the morning. It goes away in a minute and does not reccur the whole day. I dont see any abnormal smoke from the exhaust either. This has only been happening for the last week. Could it have something to do with the oil leak from my distributor O-ring? I have also had a problem with oil on two of the plugs due to worn piston rings but thats been there for a long time and this misfiring only started recently.Could you advice me on how to troubleshoot this problem?

One more thing- I've noticed that the engine surges and ebbs a few times on starting before it settles down to smooth idle. Is this normal?
    Thanks

A backfire is basically an explosion outside of the cylinder. It's sounds like a gunshot out the exhaust, or like your car is throwing up when it comes through the intake (associated with fire on carb'd cars).

The misfire are you are probably referring to is a cylinder not firing at all or only every now and then. It can also refer to a cylinder firing at the wrong time. But lets say you have a cylinder not firing, that would be due to it probably not getting spark, especially if your
plugs are oily. Check the dizzy cap (the tips on the inside corrode), the rotor (they wear out), the spark plug wires. You need to find the cylinder that is misfiring. It wouldn't have anything to do with the distributor O-ring leaking.

Ok. I'll check these items. Can you tell me why this misfiring occurs only at the time of first starting of the engine ? I start and drive at least 3-4 times during the day and it never occurs again, but I can just feel an occasional miss in the engine beat while idling at a stop light but nothing like what it sounds like in the morning.

Mine does that in the mornings when its over about 70 degrees. I have absolutely no idea why. I've checked everything, but it just runs really dumb for the first 30 seconds or so, and usually will stall at least once when I first start it. After it has it's fit, it runs just fine.

I would check the codes, and possibly check the output on the engine coolant temperature to see if its correct per this chart: http://fordfuelinjection.com/index.php?p=28

The misfiring is gone. I opened the distributor cap and pulled out the rotor. The terminal was sort of rough to the touch and had some dark stuff on it. I sanded it lightly, applied silicon grease to it and to all the contact points and put it back. Nice now. No pistol shots on starting. However the engine still surges and ebbs a few times before settling down to a steady idle.
