    aod governor info

I recently rebuilt my aod and put 3.73 gears in the rear. This is a pasture racing car and I was wondering if anyone had any experience in modifying the governer to make it shift a little later. I am shifting into 2nd gear very early and was wondering if anyone knew of anything that might change the shift points.

top speed is 50mph for 1/8th of a mile, drastically down to 10 then acceleration is the key.

    thanks,

    JC

    These are tough cars.

Easiest, tho apparently not the best, way to raise shift points is to increase TV pressure by tightening the cable that attaches to the throttle body, this will raise part-throttle upshifts, but WOT is still limited by the governor to about 4200rpms. IIRC a Mustang governor allows WOT upshifts at 5600rpms and is a direct bolt-in replacement for the one you got now, but I ain't too sure about the exact numbers.

Go to a Ford dealer, and ask for the transmission governer for a 1988 Mustang GT. They're about 12 bucks. You also need the tailshaft gasket, another 7 bucks or something. If you can get it, the only actual difference is the weight inside the governer, which may be slightly cheaper than the whole governer but the whole assembly is so cheap its almost not worth getting concerned about.
