The actual ports on an E6 head are similar to an E7 head, a lot of the change is in the combustion chamber. E6 heads shroud the valves, and have a larger combustion chamber which produces less compression. They can be made to flow the same as a ported E7, but you still get low compression and its a fair amount of work/money. Primary reason for using those over something else would be a situation where you need less compression, probably would be good for a turbo setup.
E6se head combustion chamber, notice how surrounded those valves are:
E7TE combustion chamber. These are ported and I think may have slightly larger than stock valves, but the shape is the same as stock:
This is a GT40 iron head, notice its similar to the E7 combustion chamber. Much of the improvement on this head is in the port design, but you can see where the chamber is a bit larger.
This is a GT40P head's combustion chamber, notice the plug sits closer to the valves to promote better combustion:
The reason for the special headers on a P head is entirely because of the plug angle. Normal headers won't give enough room to change the plugs, or they'll have the boots right against the header. The different plug angle results in a better combustion chamber shape, and the exhaust port has a much better design. Smaller valve gives good velocity, and the much improved design allows for more flow with less valve size, which is a huge plus for performance. The low lift flow figures are very favorable, so you get a nice wide power band with them. They also are good for a performance boost over the GT40 head because the chamber is smaller, producing more compression, around a half point if I'm not mistaken. I don't have specs handy, but I believe its slightly smaller than the E7 combustion chamber size as well, but only by a cc or so. The bump in compression + more flow = kickass.
These are P heads on something. Notice the plug sticking almost straight out compared to an E7 or stock head
There are also 2 different GT40 heads, the Cobra GT40 and the Explorer GT40. Its basically the same head, but Explorer heads have a larger combustion chamber than the Cobra or even stock E7 heads. Mill them .030ish and you get a Cobra head. Basically that bigger combustion chamber drops the compression a bit. Still its a performance gain over a stock E7, but if the chamber size was the same, keeping the same compression as the E7 head, there would be an even larger performance gain.
This is also way off topic tho, but since its the OTB forum, I can ramble.

gadget, you mention the remote possibility of someone using the high-swirl E6 heads for a low-compression setup. What would be the pros/cons of that compared to the D8OE? I thought the D8 was more similar to the E7 except for those huge chambers and nasty smog bumps.2012 Mazda5 Touring | Finally working on the LTD again!

Assuming your car was basically teh same as mine, which it should be, it originally had E5AE heads.

There's a place called Aerohead in Indy that has a deal on some worked-over E6's.

heh, thats actually where I got that pic from. The pic is larger, but scaled down on the page.
I don't know that I'd pay 800 bucks for e6 heads tho.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

Very interesting! So maybe I should consider playing with my old E6 heads at some point in the future.2012 Mazda5 Touring | Finally working on the LTD again!
