    Valve gaskets

    Hi All,

Soon I will replace my valve cover gaskets (small leak on the passenger side).

Is there anything I should look at, or do to the heads when the covers are off?

    Clean out oil holes, etc..?

    Thanks in advance

Buy the Ford blue neoprene/silicone/rubber (whatever the hell they are) gaskets instead of the cork ones. Just order the gaskets for a '96 Explorer 5.0 and they should be the right ones, at least, up here in Canada, you get the rubber ones if you ask for the ones for that vehicle. In contrast, if you ask for the ones for a Town Car/CV/GM or Mustang, you get the cork ones.

Those are made by Ford, and they're the best ones out there in my opinion. They last forever, and you don't have to worry about crushing the gasket. The last set I bought was $40, from a local ford dealer, with my connections discount.

My car had those gaskets from the factory. When I changed my VC's, I bought cork replacements, just to find that the ones that were on there were perfectly good. I also had a set from another 88 CVPI I had.

If you want longevity, go with the ford gaskets, metal with a rubber insert around the inside.

With the covers off it will real easy to see if there are any cracks or other things wrong with the valveseals...

FYI: Summit sells their own rubber/steel-core VC gaskets for half the price of the Ford ones. They've been great for me

I've seldom had a set not leak. FelPro makes a rubber over steel gasket as well, ask for the Perma Dry gaskets. Not cheap but they work very well.

I think they ask you if you want the rubber or the cork ones.
