    AOD transmission questions

First off, how is the Mustang governor/A+ overdrive servo swap done? How hard is it to do?

Second, what stall converter should I get if my turbo is going to be fully spooling around 3,000 RPM and I'm going to be running 3.73 gears? what is the stock stall?

Mustang governor weight: Tailshaft housing has to come off, snap ring for governor comes off, governor slides off. Watch out for the ball bearing which serves as the guide for the governor. Governor splits in two, old weight comes out, new weight goes in. Keep in mind, that the stock 5.0 Mustang weight only allows for around a 5200 rpm upshift. The TransGo AOD HP kit has a lighter governor weight which allows for higher rpm upshifts, I am getting 6000-6500 out of my installs.

A+ overdriver servo install: Pop the tranny pan, drop the filter and valve body (valve body and filter use 8mm bolts). At this point and time, it would be a wise idea to get a valve body/separator plate gasket from a tranny parts shop, be careful, as the break point is 1980-1988/1989-1993, as the 3-4 accumulator is moved from the trans case on the earlier model to the valve body on the later model, hence they use different separator plate gaskets. You can upgrade an earlier AOD with the later valve body, but you can't go the other way around.
Moving on....once the valve body is off (do not disassemble the valve body, there are 10mm bolts on the top side that hold it together. Look for one of the two large servo covers in the tranny case (the OD servo is buried under the valve body), look for the one with the "B" or "C" in it, and pop the snap ring holding it in place. Keep in mind that it is under pressure, and will also dump some fluid when it (literally) pops out. Make sure your new one has ALL of the O-rings that the old one has, as I have had almost every one of the billet A+ servos arrive missing one of the outer shell o-rings....it uses two.
Grease everything up using tranny assembly goo (it's red, and dissolves into the tranny fluid, however, if you don't have anything, use Dex III or Mercon), and a trick I use to reinstall it on the vehicle, is to thread in one of the longer valve body screws as close as possible to the servo, and use a lever of some kind and a 3/4 socket or so to be the fulcrum point, push it up with one hand, and thread the snap ring in with the other. A point of caution here: Make sure you have stabbed the O/D band with the pointy part of the servo piston....even I have missed it a few times. If you can get it all back in place, put the v/b back on....the shorter screws usually go around the perimeter, the longer ones inside.....the three really short screws go for the filter.

Some ideas: Get a Bronco AOD pan and new filter...increases capacity...or, get an even higher capacity 4x4 AODE/4R70W pan with the rubber/steel center core pan gasket...one bolt near the dipstick tube will be off from the AOD pan, however, I have drilled and installed a 1/4 sheet metal screw in a hurry a few times, it holds just fine (I had to do this with the 89 E150 van I sold to my brother, he caved the stock pan in), or drill and tap it to get a screw in properly. Both pans require the AOD 4x4 filter, by the way.
However, the AODE/4r70w may interfere with the rear crossmember...I can't remember if the stock CV crossmember is a problem or not.

    There ya go.

Convertors? TCI or Lentech, however, TCI requires a one-piece input shaft (have to tear the tranny apart), and if you are going to put a turbo setup on it, you need the one-piece shaft anyway(which LenTech can take care of anyway, I prefer LenTech personally).

Most aftermarket deep pans are drilled for both patterns. I am using an LPW pan and a 4x4 filter.

Converter, call them and give them the engine specs.

What cam are you using? You might want to concider 3.08 or possibly 2.73 gears. Turbo's make a lot of torq over a broad range and with low gears the tires just go up in smoke.

No. Why? Because it was all a massive trap, had we gone in there.

on the govenor swap... no need to take the snap ring and counter weight off the output shaft. 2 take the 2 screws off and swap the govenor itself.

BTW- I'm asking about stall speeds so I can pick one up on the cheap from good ol' ebay.

With convertors, you get what you pay for. You buy a cheap converter and you will destroy it and your transmission. For a performance motor the TCI Street Fighter like what i have is the cheapest you should go (mine was custom for bolt pattern and stuff, but similar ones list for $650 or so) PTC or Emerald make a damn good convertor, but be prepared to spend some money. I was looking at a PTC until i was quoted $800+ for it

as for stall, id say around 2800 or 3000, but you wont stall at that unless you have a tranny brake. and 3.73s are good for a NA motor, but not boosted, get like 2.73, or 3.08s, 3.27s are as steep as id run
