Not exactly, some have a slightly lower position on the block, so when you go to put your waterpump pulley back on, it will hit the crank pulley...

Make sure to compare the two pumps, and make sure they are EXACTLY alike!

I have gone through this trouble with BOTH my CFI cars that i've owned, and the parts store giving me a part that doesnt fit!

I always just asked for a new pump to fit my car, and when asked told them it was an iron pump (it was). always fit perfectly. I think the aluminum ones are a little different, and the HD pump is a little different as well. Mine just gets stock replacements, the last one was the cheapest reman they had in the store and its perfect. The first two were more expensive, a Napa reman and then a brand new one from the mom&pop store, both failed early. The cheapo lives on!

I had AutoZone sell me a Cleveland pump once, and insist that it was the correct part number to use on a '79 351W. I just told the manager (truthfully) that I'd compared it to a pump I just took off a Cleveland, and there was no way it was ever going to bolt onto any sort of Windsor small-block. This guy is normally pretty reluctant to accept returns, but he gave me a refund even though I'd goofed and painted the thing before noticing it was wrong.

The D9AE aluminum pumps I've dealt with (like the one currently on the '87) have very large outlets (inlets?) to the heater core. Since my original '79 reducer tube was shot (pitted through), I ended up getting an adapter kit from Summit so I could use that pump.

Were there other factory aluminum standard-rotation pumps that lacked this annoying defect?

Oh, wait, distributor != water pump. And I'd forgotten that the 351W uses the larger oil pump shaft. Bet you weren't very happy when you had to yank the motor to get the scrapnel out of the oilpan.

mine don't have large fittings to the heater core plumbing, they're actually smaller than the pipe itself and need that rubber spacer doodad that comes with the pumps when they're new.
