    Tranny trouble

Ok first off, my transmission Fluid is full, at least once a month when i take my foot of the gas then go to accelerate again it slips and the rpms go up then it grabs jolting the car, then sometimes when going slow in a parking lot it will go to shift and hesitates then you hear a clunk and it shifts, when i am in revers and hold my foot on the brake for a sec and let go the tranny slipps in and out relly quick 3 or 4 times, almost feels like the engine sputtering but its not, also to get it to shift into overdrive when its not warmed up you have to be going atleast 90 kmh then take my foot of the gas and push it again and then it will shift to overdrive, but when its warmed up it shifts in to overdrive no problem, the other day i noticed that my tv rod grommit had fallen apart and was just sitting on the linkage so i put a washer int to hold the grommit in place so the tv rod would be in the right spot again, and almost any car guy that gets a ride in my car says the tranny shifts to late, Do you guys think if i get a new tranny filter and new tranny fluid it would clear up? or should i have a tranny shop look at it? or dose anyone know what might cause it to act like this?

If a transmission comes in to work slipping and the owner of the vehicle thinks a tranny fluid flush will fix the problem, we usually send him away. The new fluid usually makes things worse. Thats what I've seen anyways.

If it has an AOD tranny in it, then it will have a TV rod.

Did you drive it around with the TV rod off of the carb? If so, you probably KO'ed the AOD. They usually only last maybe 20 miles with the TV rod/cable off, as there is no line pressure buildup as throttle travel increases (accelerating).

nope, i have never driven it with the tv rod un hooked just a little out of place when the grommit fell off, if it was unhooked it wouldent shift tho would it? wouldent it just stay in first? it is getting worse tho..

If you have a TV rod rather than cable then the TV pressure probably defaults to max rather than minimum like in an EFI cable set up. I know at least some CFI cars were like this.

I don't know if it's necessarily true that the TV rod-equipped cars default to maximum TV pressure. Tiggie said that one of their cars that had a TV rod started losing gears after the rod fell off for awhile. You'd have to ask him for more details about that.

I think that was his 87, which is EFI.

No, he PMed me about it because he remembered the bushing was in bad shape on my '89 and he wanted to warn me about it.

Has he been around lately? He could tell you a lot more about it than I could.

Yah my '82 AOD roasted because the TV bushing died. It depends on where the rod falls if your trans lives or not. Mine fell off at a lower throttle position and died. CFI might have springs set up differently or something, but VV cars have the potential to roast a trans.

I've also seen that trans flushes tend to kill a high mileage trans, especially when the fluid hasn't been changed in a while.

The wagon was doing similar stuff when I got it because the TV bushing was gone. I installed one and it's okay for now. Install a new bushing and turn up the TV pressure and hope for the best.
