As I am taking apart my motor to do the exploder intake swap and such, I have found lots of oil, too much IMO, in the intake runners. I will post pictures of the damage tomorrow. Any idea whats causing the oil to be pushed up in there. I have been using about a quart of oil every 3000-4000 miles as well.

it's normal.....the breather on the valve cover goes into the intake and the pcv too.........a quart of oil in 3-4 thousand miles is exceptional......hell my ho uses a quart every 2000 miles, which is well within normal limits

Make sure you have the screen under the PCV valve. If its not there, it will put more oil in the intake. If its only using that much oil, you're not doing bad at all. Motor has a bit of blowby, but nothing unreasonable. 302s tend to use oil when run hard anyway. If you baby it, the oil will probably stop or at least slow down, but thats no fun.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

Yep, very annoying about that breather routing. No clue why some sort of filter wasn't integrated into the system. Rerouting the fumes to the airbox would be a possible improvement, but still messy.

My original motor leaked oil about that rate. 14 mpg, so it did a bit over 200 miles between fillups, and every fillup took a quart of oil. Underside of the car used to be amazingly nasty. I was black to my armpits for a week after I swapped the engine. The fire did a real nice job of cleaning that garbage out.
Anyway, yeah my HO did the oil in the intake thing when the cylinders were oval shaped. Probably if I'd had the cam installed properly it would have run OK fine even with the high leakdown. I wouldn't worry too much about it since there isn't much you can do short of a rebuild. Oddly it used very little oil, a quart between changes was rare. Usually about 1/2 quart was normal unless I ran it hard, then it would suck the oil up.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

My old Nova needed a quart of oil every two weeks. It needed valve cover gaskets (we never installed; still got them) and was leaking bad from underneath. The is still a dark spot out front on the street where the Nova leaked most of the oil. I suppose it was the oil pan gasket that was to blame. My mom parked the Nova on top of a leaf pile in the late eighties and toasted the under carriage.

Now with Pics!
Here are some pictures of my HO engine after 20,000.
Comments?? I also broke a pintle cap and it fell into the cylinder head where the valves are, and I can't get it out, or even see where it went. I'm thinking of buying a shop vac to get it out with.1989 Lincoln Town Car - "Anabelle" - Original block, .030 over with SpeedPro pistons, rods fitted with ARP hardware, FRPP +volume oil pump, GT-40 3bar heads, Crane 1.72 rockers, 89' Fox cam, 93' Cobra lower intake, Explorer upper and 65mm TB, 93' Lightning EGR spacer, K&N intake kit from a 4.0L Ranger, 19lb/hr injectors w/ 87 Mark VII ECM, cat/smog deletes, Big Brake conversion, 3.55 K-Code Trac-Lok/Disc brake rear axle, CVPI LCA's w/1" sway bar in rear, wagon front sway bar, BBK 2.5" off-road H-Pipe, Flowmaster super 40s, HPP wheels, 3G alternator w/LMR.com wiring kit, gear reduction starter conversion, Best 1/4 time: 16.0 @ 85mph.

Should see my motor... worse than that and only 10K on the whole assembly...
1qt/10K miles is fine.
Worst I ever had was 1qt ever 5-6 miles on my 200K 2.3. Bad rings that blew the rear main out all the time. I eventually just held it wide open until it blew a hole in the side of the block.Builder/Owner of Badass Panther Wagons
