I noticed today my car only got up to 180 on the way in. It's usually is closer to 190.

Stick with the stock thermostat, around 194*. My 302s always ran best in that range. Will a higher or lower tend to cause detonation? When I first got her she'd ping on uphills before it would down shift. I bumped the timing some that cured that and recently I adjusted the trans to downshift sooner. I need to recheck my timing, but need to get a timing light again.2000 Grand Marquis LS

Excess heat can make it ping, yes. If your car has a tendency to run hot you can use a 180 tstat but I wouldn't go any cooler. The motor actually wears less at warmer temps believe it or not.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

It has never been hot since I added the gauge. I think it probably has to to with the CFI running lean at WOT that was discussed in another thread. I just want to tune it the best I can to maximize my gas mileage.2000 Grand Marquis LS
