AOD won't stay in gear/won't shift

Okay, so here's the whole story: Last August or so, I installed a dual mode (street/strip and heavy duty) B&M shift kit in my '89 CV. At first it was fine, shifted great, but then after a few shifts, the 1-2 shift softened out again. I just lived with it for a long time (I didn't have time to do anything with it so I just had to live with it).

Today, I finally got around to pulling it apart again, and I changed out the 1-2 modulator spring (the little one; I think that's what they called it) from the street/strip one to the heavy duty one. I didn't have new valve body or separator plate gaskets to use, so I just tried to reuse the old ones, which seemed all right.

Anyway, I put it all back together and got plenty of fluid in it, and then took it for a test drive. Now it won't stay in gear unless I'm stepping on the gas, and it won't shift out of first gear.

    WTF did I do???

Sounds to me like the gaskets are leaking mang. You didn't lose any check balls or anything did ya?

I did try my hand at installing a shift kit once, but thankfully mine didn't have major issues afterward even though performance wasn't all that much improved. All I really know about is TV adjustment - how's yours look?

I say new gaskets and inspect whatever you changed to be sure its correct, and that no seals or check balls, etc got misplaced.

                UPDATE:

It's fixed!!!!!! I pulled it apart again and replaced the gaskets (had to buy a complete gasket set for the tranny even though all I needed was the valve body gaskets), put it back together, filled it with juice, and it works!!! Plus, what I had originally set out to do, make the 1-2 shift firm like it should be, actually happened! I'm so happy! Thanks for all the advice and well wishes, guys.

Moral of the story: no matter how tempting it seems, DO NOT reuse tranny gaskets!

Congrats mang, I bet it's fun to drive now. And i'll remember not to reuse gaskets in the future.

Not really...lol With those 2.73s it's just such a dog. I'm hoping to switch those out in a few weeks here. Just not sure how difficult a job that's gonna be. I have a site that describes the whole job, but until I actually do it it's gonna be hard to know.

Hijacking my own thread here, but does anyone have any tips for switching out ring/pinion and rebuilding the posi unit?

It does, but only one set. I put the kit in last summer, and I was pulling it apart again on Tuesday.

Bet he was referring to why you re-used old gaskets when installing the shift kit, if the kit comes with new ones - kinda what I'm wondering too actually...

As for the slow part - if you hadn't left Ferris already I'd let you take the Chevy for a spin, it's slow till 1000rpms then the cam and mechanical advance come on and it switches to hold-on mode - it's just disturbing how quickly it accelerates, especially considering the 3.08 or whatever gears and 33" tires... Soo, take this advice - modify yer shifter "steps" or just get a slapstick, cause it's just too much fun to just drop a gear, floor it, and blow someone's doors off after you have a shift kit and and new gears in

*sigh* I'm not sure why this is so confusing. The kit DID come with new gaskets, and I DID use them when I installed it. LAST SUMMER. When I pulled it apart again on Tuesday, I didn't have another set of gaskets to put in, so I put it back together with what I had. Get it now?
