Ports on the stock heads don't require anything larger than a 1 1/2" primary. The stock HO headers are fine if the head is not ported, and really if you're planning a future upgrade, just use the manifolds for now. It won't sound horrible, not much different than it does now. The tone will be a bit different but it won't suddenly go from sounding good to sounding like hammered shit.

I am running stock manifolds on mine, stock h-pipe and duals. It sounds like a Mustang with the HO conversion, with a touch of a lope thanks to whatever the hell cam is in there now (came out of an HO but obviously isn't stock).
Manifolds won't make it sound like shit, and the car pulls like a raped ape, so I definitely picked up a boat load of power. Car is going to the track this weekend.
It ran 18-flat stock, I'll let you know what it runs now when I get back.1989 Town Car Cartier: 3G Alt. Upgrade, Mark VIII Electric Fan, Police Interceptor Suspension, 40-series Flows, loaded. Huh, I hadn't thought about issues with turbulence. Maybe I should consider exchanging my oval-port Flowtech shorties (PN 12106) for a rectangular-port design, since the GT40 ports are about the same size as an E7's.Last edited by 1987cp; 04-17-2007, 07:19 AM.2012 Mazda5 Touring | Finally working on the LTD again!

The amount of power difference from any turbulence between a square and oval port header are probably pretty insignificant really, maybe 1-2 hp at most. You'd never really notice it.
Some interesting food for thought:

So in the end your car is gonna have the full HO conversion, shorty headers with a 2.5" exhaust with an O/R h-pipe? That sounds like a good plan, and I think BBK shorties are gonna be what you're looking for.88 Town Car (wrecked, for sale)
