Dammit, can't go anywhere without breaking something...

Friggin catalytic converter came apart... Clogging the exhaust. Exhaust is one piece. Will have to buy some flanges and sections of pipe to replace the cats, and eventually some new cats. So much for racing the car next weekend. I think I will also flage the tails right behind the mufflers too. That way the exhuast can easily come apart.

It's pretty common with performance motors. Can be caused by overly rich/lean conditions.

Yeah, no shit. I hate running w/o converters though. Guess I need to get it tuned first and then put cats back on it later.

My dad melted a converter in his gmc sonoma once we modified the exhaust. Couldn't drive more than 5-10mph and he was going up a steep hill when it gave out.

That sounds scary. What did you do to modify the exhaust? Just curious because I'm considering some exhaust work on my S10. I also think the cat is starting to clog, high RPM seems to lack power and it takes ages to get from 4200-5200 when its at WOT.

Let me know how much those flanges cost to install. I'd like to add them when I do my new exhaust.

We added an aftermarket exhaust to the truck (4.3L, 4L60e, Highrider/ZR2 package) a gibson setup I think but it was still too tame so we added a straight pipe where the muffler went for a handful of days - one of those days the cat must have over heated and melted itself together doing about 60 up a steep hill. If you have doubts about it replace it before you get stranded. The truck will still drive but not at any useful speed.

Once the motor goes back in the Lincoln I might just do a new cat and replace everything behind it. Its not rusted out but the muffler has some spots that look like they're gonna go through before too much longer. Its original 1996 stuff though so no surprise there. Mostly I want it to breathe a bit better, the stock muffler is huge and cant possibly flow worth a crap. The cat is just a 3" in/out with a flange at each end so it would be simple to replace. A little bit of pipe, 2 square flanges, and 2 O2 bungholes and its good to go.
