Orange 20 tooth for 3.55 gears with a 7 tooth transmission. Purple 23 for 3.55 and 8 tooth. I've had both transmissions in my car with a 3.55 rear gear.

Chart says purple 23 for an early AOD. You can get one at any Ford dealership for about $8. If you've got a late AOD, then you're somewhat SOL. Ford doesn't make such a gear, and you'll have to check around for an aftermarket solution. They don't hold up real well because the teeth are so finely pitched, and you'll pretty much be chunking a speedo gear every 10k or so.

Justin, from what I was told, you would want the Orange gear...
I bought one for my car, I just havent gotten it in yet...
I dont have jack stands and I dont trust being under the car with a "scissor" jack holding it up...
I got mine from mustangsunlimited.com...ran $9...when I get home, I'll see if I still got the part number for it...

And then you have the weird trannys like mine with weird speedo's. The only way I got mine correct was was to use a 17T gear and it's still about 3MPH slow.

That's with 3.08's. Even that has been questioned lately. I used the procedure of jacking up the rear wheels and turning the driveshaft, the theory being a little over three turns of the driveshaft should equal one turn of the rear wheel with 3.08 gears. Of course, I turned the driveshaft and one and a half turns later the wheel had made a full revoltion. Obviously, I don't have 1.50:1 gears. One wheel turned, the other was stationary. Stay tuned as my 8.5 rear turns out to be a worn out traction lock equipped 3.42 (quite possibly a dealer installation since it was a towing package car and a dealer demonstrator) and my mystery tranny ends up having a 6T drive gear even though no such thing should have existed.

Keep in mind that in a differential when you prevent one wheel from turning, the other will spin twice as fast. So 1.5 turns of one wheel is the same as 3 turns of both wheels--you've got 3.08s, mang.
