    valve clearance issue

anyone know if i can run 1.7 rockers SAFELY with E7 heads, HO cam, and flat-top pistons WITHOUT valve reliefs? i pulled the heads off yesterday and remembered that i have no valve reliefs..

i'll be pissed if i cant run them

Get some silly putty and 2 junk lifters, make em solid, throw em in the engine and turn it over and see how much they compress the silly putty on the pistons. Should be fine tho really.

I didn't think it was possible to run E7s and an HO cam without valve reliefs... but I guess it can be done, thinking about it- pretty sure Scott does it regularly.

The 1.7s would certainly be pushing the limit, but just do the putty trick as recommended and see what you get.

Huh? Just about every HO conversion here is running E7's and HO cams on stock lopo pistons....

I'm pretty sure the 1.7's can be done without any problems.

You're right. I've had the Corral.net mentality stuck in my head from reading about all those guys who "just go ahead" and build a new short block so they can have reliefs in the '86 and other flat piston engines. I know I'm gonna be running E7s or (or Ps, due to possible availability) with either HO or Exploder cam on my flat pistons. Eventually. I want to get lots of other things stable before I start with the engine.

i know the lopo pistons work fine with the rattle rockers, but my concern is if i use the 1.7s.

if i can use the 1.7s i'd need new valve covers tho. the stock ones are junk, and the HO aluminum ones require heavy modification for the 1.7s.

i'm gonna skip it and just use stock rattle rockers. i'm not gonna be making enough power for the 1.7s to make any noticeable difference. i may sell the rockers tho..

Stock valve covers work with 1.7's. 93-95 Cobras came with 1.7's. Guess what VC's they used? Crown Vic ones!

i know, eric told me this.

problem is, my VCs are worth shit. rusted and all the bolt holes are dimpled out.

the HO aluminum ones that were on the '87-93s are the only other ones i have and those wont work with the 1.7s

I'll send you the stockers from the wagon if you want. I'll be running E4 valve covers, which clear fine on the stock configuration. If you don't mind, I'd appreciate you sending me those aluminum pieces once you get mine swapped on... unless you have other plans for them.

                    ...if you want.

stockers.. as in the rattle rockers, the stamped steel crap? i have 40 of those, maybe more.. the ones on my E6 heads, the ones that came with the E7s, and another E6 head i have lying around.

unless you got some cash money, i'm not budging with the 1.7s.. had to pay a good chunk of change for them..

yea, from what I hear and recollect...you dont really run into valve clearance issues until around .500" lift or more...
