    Motorcraft YB327 YB328 Fan Clutch

Does anyone know what is the difference between Motorcraft fan clutch YB327 and YB328? All the info I can find is YB327 is for trailer tow or police and YB328 is exc trailer tow or police. They both look the same to me.

And yes I am keeping my stock cooling fan setup, I don’t want an electric one.

I compared the fan clutches from my '82 Towing Package car to my '87 non-Tow Package car and they looked the same.

I'm not sure, but maybe the later towing package/police got 6-Blade fans and a different fan clutch to match.

Differances in fan clutches have to due with the RPM range they cut in and out at. Activated by the bi metal or coil spring on the front and also the thickness of the silicone fluid inside. So outward apperances can be very similar. I believe I STILL HAVE A 7 BLADE FAN SET UP from a PI or tow package if I didnt scrap it.

I was thinking that the difference was the RPM range they cut in and out at. I don't have a police sedan or the towing package, but I ordered the YB327. I may have to get some other parts to use the YB327, I'll find out . Is it logical to think that the YB327 would be a better choice because it was used on the police & trailer tow option? I will call the Ford dealer Wednesday and see if they have detailed specs on the two.

Its probably slightly heavier duty. Tow package cars got a 5 blade fan as far as I'm aware so who knows. It won't hurt in any case.

At least in aftermarket fan clutches (e.g. Flex-a-lite), you can get either thermal clutches, which operate when engine temperature requries, or non-thermal, which are designed to disengage at highway speeds. The thermal costs more, but the Summit catalog isn't clear if one is more heavy-duty-oriented than the other. Perhaps a similar distinction applies to factory-issue fan clutches for different applications.

I googled the numbers and YB327 is discontinued for some reason. Anyways I would have went with a flex fan if you dont want electric. Better IMO

Flex fans rob horsepower and eventually break due to the constant flexing. Fanblades through the hood are bad. Stock clutch fan or an electric are probably the better choices. Electric fan is good for about 1-2 mpg too, which is always an added bonus.

My car has a 5 blade I think and no towing package. Flex flans blow balls. My mud truck had one for about week and I got tired of the overheating. Aero electric fan on toggle fixed that though.

I'm also in a position to say do not stick your hand in the fan. it hurts and the hospital bills are expensive

My uncle is a retired police seargent and he mentioned that the older PI boxes had beefed up cooling systems because they had to sit at an idle for long periods of time in all types of weather including the summer.
