    Fuel Pump dying?

Ok it started doing this today in the wagon. I get in the car after I turn it off and start it up and it fires then dies right away. Then from the tank I hear a woo sound, different from the fuel pump sound you hear when you first turn the key. It will keep doing this till I hold the gas down for alittle bit then I can put it into gear and be fine. It did this several times in a row this afternoon as I as running around town. No matter how long it sat, in some cases just a minute or two. Now that sound almost sounded like air or something. I have 3/4 of a tank so it isn't cause I am running low.

    Thoughts??

press the release valve for the fuel rails under the hood while somebody turns the key to see if it has pressure. if it does the pump is fine. i wonder if it is the fuel pump relay. i replaced one and the new one was bad and always on keeping the pump on. see about the relay before getting to the pricey stuff like the pump

Really? Yeah I mean I hear the fuel pump prime but once it dies it makes that weird noise. Now this morning it fired up just fine twice. Now it will sit for awhile in the shop as I have started the bodywork. I will have to check out that relay though.

A 'woooo' noise and a low idle is possibly the IAC taking a shit.

Good point. All the sound came from the gas tank so that is what got me thinking.

Could be, I dunno. Last weak Ford fuel pump I heard didn't make odd noises, it was just very quiet. They aren't super failure prone on these cars, I'll bet most of the people on here are still riding on originals. Mine has 158k on it. I think Blaze changed his at over 200k and it wasn't actually bad. Of course things do break so who knows. Check the fuel pressure before replacing it though.

From what I've seen, the life of an electric in-tank fuel pump is usually proportional to how much gas you keep in your tank. If you run it down to E regularly, you are likely to need a replacement sooner than if you keep it full. Fuel cools the pump and with less fuel means less cooling. Less cooling = Hotter pump. Hotter pump = Sooner replacement.

Alright I will check the relay and the IAC. The wagon isn't going to move for probably atleast a month so I am not too worried right now.

I replaced my pump. In retrospect, it may not have actually have been bad. It was around the same time that I was having issue with the salt and pepper shakers causing the pump not to run. I found that out AFTER I switched out the pump.

Regardless, I've heard a few pumps in Mustang go bad and they get noticeably louder when they are dieing.
