I used a good old hacksaw to get mine off. then I unbolted them from the back of the heads, and filled the holes with a 9/16" bolt and some threadlocker. Then I put on a pair of mustang shorty headers and a Mustang H-pipe, and I filled the smog pump line coming off the h-pipe with some JB weld. You don't gain power so much as "free up" hidden power.

The smog pump takes about 0 HP to run. It's ugly, as are the lines, but you'd gain more from an electric fan by a pretty big margin than from removing the smog pump.

The HO swap definitely takes more time than anticipated. I did H/C/I on my Mustang in a weekend, the Lincoln took two weeks because I ended up needing custom-length pushrods. It's all in the details. If you know what you are doing and get ALL the parts beforehand, you could theoretically have it done in two days or so, working on it at a reasonable pace and being relatively anal about how it's being done. My hold up was simply the pushrods, which took a week and a half to come in.

I probably lost more low end than the other HO conversion guys because of the Explorer intake, the car is "soft" out of the hole but you can REALLY feel the cam coming on as soon as it starts to get into the rev's. It will break-free both back tires at about 40Km/h if you really lay into it, that is with 3.27's.

How healthy IS your tranny? If it's to the point where you are worried about it with the HO conversion..........
