    power steering pump cooler

    Dear Panthers,
Since I bought my 89CP seven years ago, I've had the power steering pump hoses repaired four times, a new pump installed and Scott fixed hoses six months ago. Yesterday I heard the familiar grinding noise and the damn thing was bone dry.

I drive my CP pretty hard - 12, 13 hours on the Interstate not uncommon. Scott installed the big radiator, alternator and tranny cooler.

The trailer towing package had a power steering cooler. Might it help? Donald McCaig

It could, but you must have something else going on. What is wrong with the hose, or why did the pump go dry?

Mine did the same thing. My pump is leaking. Only on the bottom though, never noticed it leaking.

I'm going to use a stock transmission cooler for my PS cooler, whenever I can get one.

        Dear Panthers,
I don't know whether hose has gone bad for the 4th or 5th time or if its bad pump seals on a pump new enough they shouldn't be leaking. I've fixed this pump too many times to believe its frequent failures are coincidence.

Let me put it in question form. Has anyone else who does highspeed sustained driving had too many problems with this pump?

Why did Ford put a power steering pump cooler in itws trailer package?

        Thanks, Donald McCaig

I'm on the original pump, and I replaced the original lines at well over 140k miles. They did not leak, and the original steering box did not leak. I do have the cooler on my car. I think the cooler is probably more useful at lower speeds when maneuvering with a trailer, since thats when the pump works harder. The cooler probably will help somewhat with keeping the fluid cooler so that the seals don't cook and fail as quickly. Personally, I'd consider installing the cooler, and flush all the fluid out of the steering system. The old fluid might have some junk in there from past pump failures, and the grit in the fluid might be damaging the seals.

I don't see how the factory p/s cooler does that much. It's just a line run out in front of the radiator, no fins or anything.

I never figured the PS cooler would do all that much either, but given that my original pump is still perfectly leak free after 20 years, and my original steering box didn't have leakage problems either, maybe there is something to it. Dunno, they must have thought it was useful or it wouldn't have gotten there on the police cars. You know how manufacturing works, anything to save a buck.
