    D and OD question

overdrive has four gears and drive just has three correct? so i can just drive in drive when im going less than 55? r there any other differences between D and OD?

    #2
Yes. With the gearshift in "D", the transmission will go from first through third gear, and with it in "|D|", it will shift from first through fourth. And you can drive faster than 55 in D, but there's no real reason to do so. No other real difference, really.

OD ratio is 0.67:1, if you were wondering.

Yes, you can, and it's actually good for your tranny. I keep my tranny out of OD unless I can maintain 55+ for at least a mile, I even modified the shifter so it allows a slide-only (no need to push the button) action between3rd and 4th gear.

3rd gear is stronger than 4th gear. Towing or hill climbing is best to do in D.

3rd gear is a 1:1 ratio, 4th gear is 0.67:1 ratio. Hence the D being over top of the O shape.

64 KM/H=40 MPH, though with either of my cars, they drop into OD at 45 MPH.

with my 3.55 gears, I usually let my Merk go into OD around 45-50mph, cuz the motor starts reving around 2000rpm+ in D.
but yea, with stock 2.73 gears I wouldn't let it go into OD until 55mph+..
otehrwise, u have to go right back into D to get it up a hill

Heh...with 2.73s it takes a lot more than 55 mph before it'll climb hills without dropping out of OD. It's ridiculous.

My original '82 tranny was a total POS. It was going to go into OD at 55mph whether you wanted it to or not (unless you used D). You could have it pretty much floored and at 55mph it slumped into OD. And during light throttle, it's go in there as soon at you hit 35mph.

With the same TV adjustments, my new tranny won't even go into OD, even with no throttle, until you hit about 43mph with 3.08's. And if you take off with a slight incline to highway speeds, it hold D until you crest the hill. I love it!

Mine when it was original and un-tweaked hit overdrive at 35 with no/light throttle with 3.55 gears. It now doesn't shift into OD till about 45 and I have to "pump" the gas pedal a little to make it do that. If I don't pump it, its more like 55-60 before it shifts. I like it. I've also got the pressure damn near at max so it shifts where I want it to.

hahaha, mine doesnt shift into OD until around 65 mph at least...even then it keeps downshifting into 3rd. I hate my transmission, I'm on a slight mission to destroy it.

the 91 doesnt like OD very much... its not happy in it unless your going 60 or more... so I keep it in D in the 55mph zones
the 85 is happy at 50 or more...
