    Starter Questions

A guy at work has an '84 crown vic wagon that i am inerested in getting. pretty rough shape but probably can get it for cheap. The problem is he says he had gotten a new starter for it and when you try to start it there is just a grinding noise. He had the starter tested and it was fine(well it turned i guess). Any ideas of what the problem could be? If it is something simple enough i will probably buy it but if it needs any major work i probably wont bother.

Might be the ring gear is shot. Might also be a defective starter, the bendix might not be flying out enough to engage the flexplate. Usually the test for if its a bad flex plate, get a breaker bar to rotate the engine over some, then try starting it. if it works normally, there is a bad spot on the flexplate.

Can you get it to start? Is it just a fast click? Check the battery.

Well i havn't been around the car when he tried to start it. But he says its a grinding not a clicking. Rotating the engine to try a different spot on the flywheel is a good idea. Bryans 550 ranger suggested the starter needed to be reshimmed. I am going to try and check out the car sometime in the next week, and test some things.

There are two starters for the 302, one for the AOD and t-5 and then one for older 3 and 4 speed manuals. It is possible that he got an old starter with the different offset.

thats what i was thinking. Ive never heard of that. a Ford starter bolts to the bellhousing of the transmission, so its location is always the same in relation to the centerline of the drive axis. In a Chevy the starter bolts to the block, in that case it can become misaligned due to manufacturing tolerances along with removal and reinstallation of motor/trans/starter.

Does the ring gear go around the flywheel? I'm just not to familiar with this so i have no clue. If the ring gear is the problem is there an easy way to tell like rotating the engone a little and trying to start it then?

yeah its the teeth on the wheel. there is actully an inspection plate at the bottom of the bellhouseing you can remove to expose the bottom of the plate/ring gear. if Im wrong about that that you can remove the starter also and have a look. rotate the wheel by turning the crank bolt to check out all the teeth

easiest way is to pull the inspection cover, it is just two bolts.
