Okay, I know that a later 3G alt will work in our boxes with minor rewiring. I am planning on hitting the junk yard next month when it warms up to take a look for a 95 5.0 Mustang that some kid has wrecked

Well I was wondering, should I upgrade anything else? I was also wondering what would be a the significance of having a high powered starter? j/w

If you were running 12:1 compression in your motor I think a high powered starter would be justified. On a mostly stock motor I dont think the stock starter has any problems. Wont really help ya in any way. Save the dough and put it into something cool.

you already upgraded all you battery wiring with your system right? once you install the 3g with a fat charge wire you should be good to go, power supply wise.

Yes, I have 1/0 ran strait to the alternator from the battery. Upgrade the ground on battery and ground from engine block to chassis as well to 1/0. 1/0 cable ran to my amps in the trunk too. Don't have to upgrade anything else if I upgrade the charging system then?

you could upgrade to a gear reduction starter if you wanted... they are smaller and sound neato.

The high torque starters are handy for the fact they weigh less and are smaller. Its also nice for super compression engines. If yours dies, I'd consider replacing it but if its not broken, don't fix it. You can get the retrofit kit with the new starter for fairly cheap on eBay. The retrofit kit is basicly just a small wire that goes from the existing starter side of the relay, and you move your thick cable to the battery side. Nothing special that couldn't be easily engineered out of a common piece of 14 ga wire and a couple wire ends.

I'd have replaced my starter with one of the new type, but the local parts store wanted $110 for a new type, and $30 with a $50 core for the old style. I brought them my spare old school starter and handed over $30. I've seen the new type on eBay for maybe $60 or so.

What stock car(s) typically have this, so I can hear what you mean by the "neato" sound. Would my moms 2005 Sebring have this? And what would I have to look for on the starter's "specs" so it would work fine with my 302?

check out the videos of the 91 - it has one. It kinda sounds like an aero cranking.
The never 5.0 fords got them after close to the same year as the boxes Id imagine

Okay, I watched your first vid in your thread in the video section, that does sound a hell of a lot better starting up than mine. It sounds more "modern".

there are 200 amp 3G's for the mod motor but they wont fit on the 302. there are several aftermarket manufactures who make 130, 160 and 200 amp alternators. If you have a really high power need check out http://www.ohiogen.com/index.html

Or a local shop might rebuild em for higher amps. My local place will anyway, and give a printout of amps @ rpms
