I use Valvoline MaxLife, the same as what goes in the tranny (so I can carry one bottle for both in case a fill-up is needed) - can never hear the pump, except when it's really low on fluid.

I had my Mustang do the same thing, it had a loud pump when I got it. Changed the fluid out for Mobil 1 ATF and it became VERY quiet.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

I stuck some Lucas in there, took care of most of it. Its an original pump with 158k miles on it, if it wants to make noise for 5 seconds in the morning, it's more than welcome to do so. It works, and most of the time it makes no funny noises so I'm not going to worry about it.1989 Town Car Cartier: 3G Alt. The great part about that is if you spin the gears with a high-speed drill to demonstrate how they would work in a rear-end or transmission, you should see the stuff FOAM!!!! And of course air=no lubrication and lots of metal-on-metal! YAY for Lucas!1989 Town Car Cartier: 3G Alt. Upgrade, Mark VIII Electric Fan, Police Interceptor Suspension, 40-series Flows, loaded. Make sure you guys are using the Type-F in your Power Steering or Power Steering Fluid. Mercon wasn't recommended in PS until 1996.1990 Country Squire - under restoration

I'm going to check my manual, but I was pretty sure it said Mercon.........
Regardless, the Mobil 1 ATF has made a striking difference in both pumps, and so I will continue to run it.1989 Town Car Cartier: 3G Alt. I don't really think the mixture of Type-F/Mercon-III/Power Steering Fluid will make that much of a difference anyway. I just figured I'd let you all know.
I put Mercon in my Ranger P/S and then read the owners manual that called for Type-F.
While the different types have very different properties, I don't think it matters that much in a typical power steering system.1990 Country Squire - under restoration

Power steering systems are not sensitive at all to different type of fluid. Reason is that it's just a pump. It's not like a tranny where the fluid is used to determine shift points based on pressure or actuate a servo at a specific rate which are dependent on viscosity. PS is just a pump to apply pressure.

My PS dipstick said to use Mercon II. I've also seen a mix of engine oil and trans fluid for really dead pumps.
The Lucas isn't horrible, it did shut the pump up, and that was enough for me. I dont use it in anything else but the noise went away. if it blows up, I wont really care. Its 21 years old and at this point anything is just a matter of time before a part fails.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

20 year old fluid + bandaids works just as well. Besides, if you mix Lucas in with the gunk, you get a wierd red-purple-brown color fluid and thats a lot more interesting than boring pink.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).
