    Rear End Swap

Ok so the racing season is starting soon. I need a rear end with trac-loc that i can put in the car. My question is, are there any rear ends that i can take from another vehicle that will bolt up with out hassle. Are axle shafts different size than a mustang, f-150, explorer? Thanks

Just get a 3.55 gear, and a limited slip differential. No need to change the entire rear axle.

You want a 3.55 LSD (K code) rear end from a CV/GM or town car. I found mine in a 84 town car and have seen them mostly in town cars and CV station wagons with tow package.

it would cost me more to put gears and trac-loc in my rear end than it would to go to a junk yard and pull one. 88grandmarq what years do i need to look for? 1980-1990

It is possible to use the rear axle from 92-97 cars as well, the main difference being they came with disc brakes and the lines are different.

K-code was an option on most cars, AFAIK. 82-83 was the the first year for the 8.8" rear diff. I have seen K-codes mostly in town cars and CV wagons.

'83 was the first year of the 8.8 and 3.55's, so '83-'91 will work for sure. I know the earlier 8.5 had ratios up to 3.42 and were available with a traction-lok, not sure about the 7.5's.

I've also heard '92-'02 rears bolt in as well (besides the brakes), but I don't know for sure.

If you wanna find a ring a pinion, just about any 8.8 will work. Axle shafts are a different story, they are different lengths and some are 31-spline (F150, Explorer) compared to 28-Spline. But I believe you'd be better off just finding a complete rear axle.

If you use that car to race with, you may think about getting a w-code(3.73 locker). You'll feel a big difference in acceleration, but your highway economy will dive some.

W code was only used in 87-88 turbo coupes with automatic trans. while it is a good gear, the diff assembly will NOT bolt into the panther platform.

your best bet is find a K code in the junk yard, rebuild the traction lock on it, replace the axle bearings and seals then bolt it in the car. cheap and easy

What do you mean by it won't bolt to the Panther platform? I thought the diff wasn't bolted to the frame. And didn't T-Bird Supercoupes use 3.73's also?

You are correct in that the differential doesn't bolt to the frame, it bolts to the suspension and that bolts to the frame. The mounting places for the suspension is different from the Fox bodies from a Panther.

I'm not sure of the ratio SuperCoupes used, but they have IRS. They do use an 8.8 center section though.

I believe Fox chassis rears are also narrower than a Panther rear.
