Plug wires, good for how long?

How often does everyone replace their plug wires and what do you use?

As far as replacement intervals, that's going to be somewhat dependent on the quality of the wires you use, but when I replaced mine I used the Bosch Premiums. They were about $45 for a set and have nice low resistance. They've been real good so far. The ones that people seem to like the most is the Ford Racing wires. I don't know much about them, but I can only assume they're good.

I replace them when they look damaged, the car starts running screwed up, or I have too much money, but you should be able to get 30k or so out of them without much issue if you're using a decent quality wire and they don't get burned on your headers.

If you really want to get technical, they should be replaced when the resistance gets too high. I think the standard figure is 1000 ohms per foot. You can also test them for being leaky with two very precise instruments and a complicated procedure. The instruments involved are a spray bottle with water, and your eyes. The procedure involves getting the car to a nice dark area, and misting the wires down with the water while the engine runs. If everything starts glowing blue/purple or you see arcs from the wires to the engine, they're shot.

Yeah, spray the coil a little, they tend to look pretty neat. I replaced my original coil becase it looked like one of those plasma ball things when it was wet.

Though on a 4.6l, FWIW my Marquis was running it's factory original plug wires for nearly 10 years and 4xk miles before they were changed. Even then, the wires will still in excellent shape, and were replaced 'just cause' :-P

Our '90 Town Car was sold with original plug wires, I bet it still is using those just fine

So, IMO Motorcraft wires are an excellent choice.

I put FRPP wires on my (well, not anymore) '93 T-bird 5.0 HO and they seemed pretty good as well.

Most stock wires from the Box car era were around 2000-4000 ohms per foot. Aftermarket replacement found at most auto stores, in the silicone core variety, usually run 500-1000 ohms per foot. As a rule, the less resistance, the better. The spark travels farther, stronger. I run Taylor wires on most of my vehicles. THey are a custome fit, build-the-end yourself wire. 250 ohms per foot average. Pretty colors too.

Ooohh, where'd you find semi-tailored plug wires? I was under the distinct impression that you couldn't get those anymore. But I wants 'em!

Red Rooster in Crystal or Rogers has them Nathan. Grab a set once you are back in town. They come in straight, 90 degree or 135 degree spark plug end, just cut and make the distributor end and you are all set.
