    Not exactly 5.0 tech but...

Alright guys, Here's my question and I know it's been mentioned but dunno how serious anyone gone into thought about it. Anyway I decided to see if I could part out my Merc since in its current state to me it's just a lawn ornament. So I was having some buddies ask around, well this guy is willing to trade me a running 4.9L out of his truck and some money for my 5.0L. Now this got me thinking why not put the 300ci into the merc. I mean I know the 5.0 is in it now and if I wanted to get it running I'd just fix it up with the current motor. But I like the idea, It'd be a first and be an interesting learning experience since I havn't done any custom jobs like it. So my questions are:

    1. would the AOD bolt up to a 300?
    2. motor mounts, F-series pickup possibly?
    3. Fuel for a carbed 300, what would I do about a pump and the lines?
    4. Computer control, how would I go about getting this all working properly.

It's a long shot and just an idea but I want to do some "research" and such to see if I really do wanna tackle this.

    Thanks in advance, Dave

The AOD you have now won't bolt to the 300, you'll have to find a 300 AOD which are somewhat rare.

Motor mounts would probably need to be custom.

For Carb'd, you could run a mechanical fuel pump from a truck or van, or older full sized car.

For EFI... ehh lets not get into that.

The 240/300 Sixes are very very long motors. An FE big block fits better in a Galaxie than the 240 six did. It's gonna be tight if it fits at all.

The 300 is a torquey engine, but slow to rev up and usually makes power down low. It's not an ideal car engine if you are looking for performance.

    Stick with the 5.0!

The 300 straight six is a very torquey engine and is builitproof reliable, but it's made for towing, not performance. It'll be great in the lower end, but once the RPM's go up all that torque won't be there. It'd be very slow, so if I were you i'd just fix up the 5.0, maybe a HO conversion just for kicks.

It might be all right if you put 2.73 gears in it. It'd have enough torque to not be a total slug, and high end power wouldn't be an issue. You probably wouldn't want it for a DD, but it'd be pretty cool just for the "different" factor.

This project would be just for kicks nothing performance or anything. I wouldn't be dropping tons of money into it really. I'm probably just gonna sell the car for scrap more then likely. Any one in the northeast want it?

Sounds like an idea I had. Since the motor is out, you switch to a street cam. Okay, so now the slow spool / down low torque problem is solved. Then you toss on one of them offenhauser dual quad intakes, a set of headers, and you'll have something to embarass the V-8 boys with.
Twas the main reason I got my F-250 with the inline 6.

I got a 300 in my pickup I'm working on this moment. Damn thing starts quicker than my merk even tho its been sitting for 3 weeks in the cold. I love that motor.

I am almost positive the 300 and SB fords share the same bellhousing. It would probably bolt up to the AOD. I have a spare bellhousing from a 300 and a 302 block plate. I could look tomorrow and see for sure.

Motor mount would definetly need to be custom, you might be able to save some time using mounts from a maverick with a 240 or even an old fullsize sedan lika a galaxie. But you would probably need to hack em up to the point where it would have been better to make your own.

Fuel pump...you could use the stock mechanical pump for a carb. For a carb the stock carter YF 1bbls are shitty. I dont like em at all. But they work pretty reliably.

EFI? The late 80's trucks with 4.9's had efi and were damn good and made even more torque. If you got the wiring and computer you might be able to use it.

The length and hieght of the motor will be your biggest issue. Real long and real tall.

It will bolt to your tranny. Problem is
                          A) you need to ditch your hood
                          B) you need to move your radiator up about a foot.
