    Fuel pumps not working....

On my 84 "baby" LTD... The fuel pumps just quit working... Went to start it the other day to move it... no fuel pump "whine" when I turned the key on... There could be four culprets...

    1. Fuel pump fuse
    2. Fuel pump fusible link...( I HATE those!)
    3. Fuel pump relay
    4. Inertia switch went bad

I looked for a fuse blown... but I can't find a fuse labeled fuel pump... Does it have it's own fuse?

I have looked for the fusible link... where the heck is it?

Same for the fuel pump relay.... can't find it in the engine compartment... any ideas???? (maybe I'm not looking in the right place under the hood....)

Where is the "inertia switch"???? It may hve gone out?

Hope somebody can help on this... trying to get the car running again...

well, your baby LTD is a FOX chassis and not a panther chassis.

Not sure about the LTD, but the Mustangs have the fuel pump relay under the drivers seat.

On my '90 Mustang, the fuel pump fuse link was a small blue wire on the starter solenoid.

You could also simply have a faulty fuel pump.

Uh, I know that... I was hoping someone on here that may have had a Fox body in the past or present might have had the info.... Or maybe one of our mechanic types may have run across this problem before.... And I will check out the clues you gave me... thanks... Tom....

Checked out the wiring circuits today...
(Yes, it is NOT raining for once when I'm off!!!! WOO HOO!!!)
Also found the relay in the trunk, right front side of the trunk, right under where the rear speakers are.... Couldn't find the "inertia switch"... Supposed to be in the trunk somewhere... but I haven't found it yet....
wasn't the fusible link... it has power all the way to the relay plug... so replacing the relay, hopefully that will fix the problem... The old one looks pretty corroded.... probably from when the trunk used to leak.... even the contacts were REALLY corroded....

HOPEFULLY the relay will fix the problem!

Going to try to get the rest of the interior done.... before it starts raining again!

Replaced the relay and a new inertia switch today.... still no friggen fuel pumps working.... will be tracing wires tommorow.... ARRGGHH!!!!!!! I HATE tracking wiring/circuit problems!!!!! Only thing that I can think of is maybe the hot wire going to the pumps is broken somewhere.... or a bad ground to the pumps..... IF I don't find the problem soon.... I am going to rip the electic pumps out, and start converting this damn thing to the carb a little sooner than I wanted to!

              Tom.....

What happens if you hot wire the relay? Jump power from the +12v to the wire going out to the fuel pump. Might be that the relay isn't getting its signal from the ECM to actually engage. Should be able to tell if you run a test light across those two terminals.

this is a CFI, Fox body. all the Fox bodies I have worked on get power to the fuel pump relay through the starter solenoid when the ignition switch is turned on.

Tom, you need verify the ignition switch is sending power to the solenoid, then verify the fuel pump relay hot wire is working.
I had a '90 Mustang hatch that lost power to the fuel pump after I changed the ignition coil. turns out the power wire for fuel relay was corroded and broke under the insulation, right at the connector when I messed with all the connections on the starter solenoid.

I would suggest finding a wire diagram for this vehicle to save you some headache.

BTW... you still havent ruled out the fuel pump is good.

Jumping the pump to power would be an easy test, as you may simpley have a bad pump.

I thought of that, but both pumps going out at once? I doubt that... I am thinking the power somewhere or ground is the problem... will be checking further today.... after I do some errands.... at least it is nice out today.. no rain in the forcast again!!!!
I'll check the things you mentioned... I do know I have power from the starter relay... (the one that stays hot all the time... that is connected to the starter relay, with the fusible link) checked it with a test light... the wire from that is hot at the fuel pump relay plug... just got to track down and check all the other circuits.... And I have a wiring diagram in my chilton manual... about the only thing it is good for!

Checked the pumps out today by "hot wiring" the fuel pumps.... ran a wire jumper from the hot wire on the relay plug to the terminal going to the pumps.... nothin, nada... next stop is under the car to check the grounds, and if there is power to underneath the car.... at the fuel pump.... may run a wire to the pump direct to check them.... I AM going to figure this out!!!!

Also figured out that I have to pull the passenger front seat to re-align the holes for the gun rack... I tried for about 45 minutes today to mount the thing.... but the holes I cut for the screws must have moved when I put the front seat in.... and now they don't line up... It just wasn't my day today!!!!
The heavy vinyl flooring is hard to just pull over to get it lined up, like regular carpeting!!!!!

                        Oh well always tommorow!!!!!

                        Tom....
