    Fuel Flow Sensors

Does Ford still service the fuel flow sensors that were used on carbureted cars with tripminders? I'm thinking of building up a 4 bbl 351W for the Lincoln, but it has the digital dash, which I'd like to keep. To my understanding, if I can get one of those sensors, it can be done.

So can I get one at my auto parts store, or do I have to harvest one from the boneyard? Also, can someone give me an idea of how much I would have to pay for one?

On a related note, if I want to keep the in-tank fuel pump, will an adjustable fuel pressure regulator work, or am I better off just going to a mechanical pump?

If your gonna do a carb swap and try to use the stock electric pump then your gonna need a bypass regulator. Think about this, you are trying to go from 45psi down to 6-10psi. You cant use 1 inlet and 1 outlet regulator with the screw to adjust pressure because it will blow the pump and you still couldnt get the pressure down enough and it would probably flood out the carb all the time.

You need a nice bypass regulator with 1 inlet and 2 outlets. One outlet is the one with the correct pressure and the other is a larger return line for the excess pressure back to the tank. The return line needs to be large so that it bleeds off all that extra fuel back to the tank with out getting restricted, at
the least 1/2 line should be used. The regulators arent too cheap and the lines will be pretty expensive if you use AN fittings.

Usually its just better and more economical to just drop the tank and make a sump and remove the stock pump, but some mustang guys have used the stock pumps with the bypass regulator and run well.

As far as the fuel flow sensor. My uncle had an old 70's ford dump truck with a fuel flow sensor that would show how much fuel you were using while driving. Maybe you can find one off that, I'd go to the yards and look at all the carbed cars and check. Green Sales has a ton of odd parts for fords that are brand new, maybe you can give them a call and ask if they got one.

This is the regulator you would need, as you can see they aint cheap.

I dont like my mechanical one too much. Everything is really close to either the PS pump, the oil filter or the frame. I'd get an in line electric one if I could do it again. Its a cleaner install and its just a better pump. it might even be cheaper in the long run, you need to buy the mechanical pump which is around 50-60 bux, and either drill out the timing cover boss or buy an older one which has the boss already drilled out and hope you have a fuel pump eccentric on the front of the cam already.

With the electric one, mount it, wire it up, run the lines wherever you want and be done with it.

So can I buy an electric pump that's made to be used with a carbureted setup?

yeah, a holley makes pretty good ones, the red and blue and black pumps are great. You can step up to magnafuel and aeromotive if you got the $$$$, but its not worth it on our cars.

In theory, you could just slow the stock pump down by reducing the voltage to it.

What kind of a price would I be looking at for a Holley pump?

interestingly the Summit pump has identical specs and appearance to the Holley black pump for $50 less. I wonder who makes it......

I dunno. I may end up just going with a mechanical fuel pump. We'll see. Either way, if anyone's interested, I'll keep you updated.

I'll go see if I can hunt down a part number off mine, that would be a place to start.

Thanks Tiggie. That'd be great. If it wouldn't be too much trouble, a picture of the thing would be very helpful too so that I'd know what to look for and where to look for it when I go to the boneyard.

I couldn't find a part number on it, but it's possible it is there, mine is covered with vacuum hoses!

Here is what it looks like:

It's on the intake manifold, on the right side between the distributor and the carb. It has a fuel line going in and one going out, kind of looks like a proportioning valve bolted to an intake.
