    vacuum leak

i'm almost certain i have a vacuum leak, hence the hissing noise everytime i put my car into gear from park. the vacuum lines attach to the thingy (very technical term) that releases the parking brake when going from park into gear, correct? well mine is leaking, and it's only getting worse. now i know these big bodies aren't power-houses, but my crown vic is pretty doggy, could this be due to the vacuum leak? and how the hell do i fix it? and where EXACTLY is it coming from?

The "thingy" is a white half-moon shaped plastic thing attached to the steering column right up against the firewall. Look right above the brake pedal and you'll find it. Unplug the lines and cap them off. It won't cause a massive performance degradation but it is not helping anything either.

Do what Gadget says. I replaced mine a few months back, it was doing the same thing as yours (hissing when selecting gears and no parking brake release). If you want a new one, the part number is E45Y-2B623-A. In my mind, fixing the vacuum leak there made the car feel better, although thats pretty subjective.

Plug the line. Those parts are not designed well and a new one will just leak again. If you set the parking brake, with the line plugged, all you have to do is pull the brake release lever. NO big deal. Lastly, spend $35 on a vacuum tester. Highly reccommended. You will be able to find future leaks. After the digital volt meter, I think the vac tester is the most valuable special tool.
