    Engine Build Opinions

I'm collecting parts for my engine build. As usual, I'm on a somewhat tight budget.

I'm going to be using the fresh short block out of my '87 (presently own). Intake is going to be a Weiand Stealth (presently owned) with probably a Holley 600cfm (presently owned). Cam is going to a stock HO or an E303 (still need). Exhaust is going to be handled by Mustang Shorties and Off-Road H-Pipe (presently owned), gears are 3.27's (already have), and a fairly stout AOD (already installed).

My question revolves around the heads. I'm not using the stock lo-po's, or the D8OE's on the '82 motor. I got a set of C6 289 heads, but I don't want 10.5:1 compression.

I can pick up some E7TE's for $70-$100, or I can get some GT-40's from a '96 Exploder for $270. I know the GT-40's flow a lot better, but are they really worth the difference in prices? And I also have the option of picking up a '96 complete Exploder 5.0 for $330, but it didn't start at the junkyard, but has 130 compression.

    What should I do?

stock for stock, the gt40 heads are a lot better, probably worth the price. If you're not planning on having any port work done, I'd fork for the gt40 heads if they're in good condition. If you're planning on port work, the e7 heads can be made to work as well or better than a gt40, so if you want to go that route, I'd say e7 because they're cheaper initially.

Good price on the Exploder motor, but if you already have a good shortblock, you don't really need it. One thing you could do though, buy it and sell me the intake. It would make your heads end up cheaper, and you get another probably good shortblock.

I'm with gadget on this one,If you don't wanna fork out the $$$ for port work on the E7's,just go with some cheap GT-40's on throw them on your 87's E7 block.

That is an excellent price on that exploder motor! If it's still in good shape,I would buy it,sell the entire EFI setup for $200 and then have a complete explorer block + GT-40 heads for $130.:headbang:

The complete 96 motor is the no brainer choice. Forget about putting lipstick on a pig and stick to the GT40 heads.

yea, I agree with gadget and everyone else, go for the GT40 heads.
You'll get about 40hp instead of 15hp and not be paying too much for them.
While ported E7's are better, they will dent your wallet a lot more.

So 130psi compression is pretty good on these motors? I'll might go check out both the heads and the complete motor Friday.

The GT-40s will have hardened exhaust seats for use of unleaded gas. Not so with the C6s or the DOs.

The HO cam is a good choice for a daily driver. The 'E' cam will be a stone below ~2500.

If you decide on an aftermarket cam, look for something along the lines of 204/214 duration @.050, 112 to 114 LSA. That will give a smooth idle and power just off idle to ~5000
Speed cost....how fast u wanna go??

It's not how much hp u have...
It's how much hp u can put to the track...

Let's seperate the men from the boys and put that power to the track using street tires and stock suspension components

Yeah, just buy the Explorer motor and sell me the EFI stuff you don't need.
