Just a nicer version, power seats, possibly leather, aluminum wheels, I dunno, just more creature comforts and fancy shit. I think its short for Deluxe or luxury

shiny chrome trim along the bottom of the doors and the rear fender, around the fenders, power antenna, just a bit nicer inside and more trim outside.

Basically the highest option level. A P74 in the VIN#.

I got an '87 LX. It's loaded with leather, power everything, tripminder, premium sound, turbine wheels.

LX is top of the line, besides the PI. It has basically what the other guys said. I had a base Vic with power everythng and a tripminder, but no leather or turbines. Also, dual exhaust was an option on the LX.

Power antenna and aluminum wheels are not standard on the LX. Niether are the curb lights. Dual exhaust was part of the towing package.

PI cars are far from top of the line. They're usually the most strippo model possible with all the heavy duty engine/suspension stuff.

The CV loaded model is the LX, the loaded GM is the GS.

Believe it of not,my best friends uncle actually has a 89 Crown Vic PI LX.It's a full fledged P72 only it has the LX interior and all the Luxury options except for power antenna and premium sound.I guess it was a specially ordered PI.

Just like they can now, the police cars can be ordered any way they wanted, but the trimmed down slick top "beat" cars were more common for sure. I guess the only ones that got kept around since then were the nice ones.
