Could I use a Holley Systemax upper? I was told that would fit under the hood. But is that meant for the HO intake???

    Holley Systemax Upper

And can I assume that anything that's sold for a Mustang will fit under my hood?

Fordman, is this what the intake looks like that you have?

Why would'nt the HO lower fit your 351,you have the same heads E6 or E7 heads as the 302 correct? If so it will fit.

Deck heights are different between the 302 and 351.

Custom the 351W has a taller deck which means the heads are farther apart then the 302's. This means the 351W requires a wider lower intake.

Nathan yes that's the intake except for some reason that upper is on backwards.

Thanks, Fordman. Any chance you'll be able to get those measurements for the height/width/length of the intake for me? I just want to find out how much clearance I'd need to add. If it's only a couple inches above the hood, that's okay, but If it's 5-6 inches or something, that's going to be too much. And mad-max style, while it would be hilarious, isn't really an option.

From block to the top of the throttlebody cable cover is 14".

Thanks, Fordman. Only problem is, I tried to measure it in my car and it was so dark, so greasy, and there were so many &&$^#%#$ vacuum lines in the way it was hard to tell where the intake ended and the block began!!!

Can you tell me where on the block you measured from, just so that I can be sure to get an accurate idea? If you can measure from the point on the block where the distributor goes into the block (I think that's a little bit lower, but as long as we're consistent it shouldn't matter) that would be the easiest for me. I've got it circled in red here.

If I was measuring right, it looks like it may only be a couple inches high, which would mean the scoop wouldn't have to be grotesquely big.

                  Thanks again,
                  Nathan

Yup, exact same thing used on the old 351W lightning P/U's. Pretty pricey though. The GT-40 lower would allow use of a box style upper though, since it uses a common flange. GT-40/cobra/explorer all share that.

Tell me more...I can't find it on the Ford Racing website or on eBay. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right place.

That measurement I gave was from the front of the block where the intake sits(behind the distributor as shown in the pic below ).

For less then the price of the GT40 intake you could buy a brand new 4V intake and carb. If your engine is carbed now why not just go with a 4V??

Yeah, you may be right. I was just hoping that maybe I could do something a little different, and something that might give me a little more low-end grunt, as well as better mileage than with a 4 bbl.

Though I guess if I was concerned about mileage I'd be driving a Honda Civic or something...

Go with a Performer RPM or Weiand Stealth 4V hi-rise dual plane intake and you'll get great low end torque and top end power. But hood clearance will be very tight(ask Duce ). A Performer will give you good performance and still be able to use the stock hood.

I just think a 4V will save you a lot of headaches. No wiring, hi pressure fuel pump, Fuel lines, return line, or other BS. Just swap intake and carbs.

The difference in mileage won't be worth the hassle.
