    Ignition Boxes Questions

Ok, I dont know much about Ignition systems at all, so i'm just hoping someone can enlighten me a bit. When I start upgrading I want to upgrade the ignition sytem as well. I know what the general purpose of the boxes are, but have absolutely no clue on how to hook one up or where to even start looking for the right one to buy for my car. Future mods will be a Total E7 conversion, and the upgraded ignition will be going in with the rest of the swap. Nothing too crazy. Any help is much appreciated.

If you're going to retain the stock type EFI, you really can't do a whole lot with the ignition system. Ford uses whats called a TFI, or thick film ignition module mounted right to the side of the distributor. THis isn't just an ignition module, it also provides input to the computer regarding engine rpm and crank position. The ECM uses pulse from the ignition pickup to determine how fast the engine is running and when to fire the injectors. There are aftermarket TFI modules avaliable, but I'm not honestly sure what, if any, gain they provide. The one simple, cheap, and effective means of sprucing up your ignition system is to replace the stock ignition coil with a high output one. MSD, Jegs, and Summit all sell high performance replacement coils that simply plug in where the stock coil is. Overall the stock Ford ignition system really isn't too bad unless you're really planning on making huge amounts of power. A better coil, quality wires, cap and rotor are plenty sufficient for probably ~300 horsepower.

Ya, I dont really see my car making 300+ horsepower anytime soon, and I was thinking about replacing the coil when I got the car, just never did it. Have an Accel cap and rotor on it now, and a set of Taylor Thundervolt 8.2mm wires waiting to go on. Thanks for the Input
